I'm back from a visit to my garden, and someone there left the gate open again. The deer and rabbits have been munchin' down, but they still left plenty for me. To much really, I've got baskets of tomatos and plenty of cucumbers too. The peppers did all right and the cauliflower is nearly ripe. Theres plenty still there but I only had so much room!I left the gate open as I left, seemed only fitting to share what's left. The cat's are really happy, I didn't forget their catnip...brought back a little something for myself too~
Now I need some help with the cannin' and there's pickles to be made... an old family recipe there. there's plenty for everyone and a little something extra to make the canning easier~
It really was a good year for my garden!

Anyone want to help with the canning and the pickles?
How about an old family recipe, got any of those?

My mum was a star at canning and pickles, but she passed away six years ago. However, my lil sis (she's 50 but she's still lil sis and I'm big bro) has continued the family tradition ...... Hmmmmmm!

I grew up an a farm southwest Iowa. And canning was a lady part of the family thing us little monsters were exiled from house at these times. But I do remembeer raiding the cave for whole quarts of pickled beets I did love them and miss them to this day. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane Spunky. Later Jim

The only real gardening I ever tried was illegal cultivation of a small harmless crop of peaceful weed for me own consumtion.

Growing veggies would be cool, becoming self-reliant like.

Good read again.

Well Thanx Friend, I've had a few bigger patches as well all just for personal enjoyment The veggies are a bit of self sufficency, not the same as when I still had the farm though!~

When I read this I immediately thought of my mother's pickled watermelon rinds. I always thought it was her own original idea until I saw Miz Huny's post. Small world, ain't it? If you use a little of your 'salad' in select jars you could have some awesome pickles!!!

Add marjoram, sweet basil, and oregano, all leaves, all fresh, to your tomatoes when canning them also a pinch of sugar - add just before sealing the lids and re-heating them! Add whole black peppercorns to your peppers when canning them.

Thanx *EG* That I'll try, it does sound really good! Your own recipes there?

Yum! I sure would love some cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers! I've never canned before. So I wouldn't be any help to you. It sure is nice of you to share with the wildlife. I'm sure they're grateful in their own way.

spunky11961 replies on 9/10/2006 12:55 pm:
Well Thanx KarmoHunny! you're more than welcome to some there's plenty here! I learned to share with the wildlife from my dad, at the farm we always left some corn or grain unpicked back by the woods. In the winter we even took hay and grain out there too!~ gotta give back what is given

I'm just a country girl, but canning and making pickles is not on my "to do " list.

I buy my pickles in a jar at the grocery store, and my fresh veggies come from the store too!
But I hope your canning and pickle making turns out good!
