Recently I did a post about spending the day at work playing with a dog....
Now that dog's owners are moving away, and They can't take him with'em,They just offered him to me! He's a beautiful German sheperd, only a year old. I'd love to have him,but he's got one little flaw. They told me he hates cats! I've got the two,Henri and Tiffy,so I can't take him!

Kilo's his name,he's got till tomorrow to find a home.
Our Shelter here is full, they can't take him.
Tomorrow Kilo goes to the Pound,That's a three day death sentence here! Once Kilo goes in, He'll never walk out alive.....

Now I'm asking myself,Do I risk taking him and keeping him outside? I can't just let him die...
Should I take him, and maybe find him a home?
What if Mom lets the cats out again?
I got all these questions running through my mind but no answers....
All I know is I can't stand by and let this dog die...

Any man who calls their cats Henri and Tiffy?- I don't think a German Shephard is a wise choice mate....
And what is wrong with cat names of Henri and Tiffy "Mate"??

What do you name a cat, "Chainsaw" and Flame Thrower"??

A cats name doesn't have anything to do with what kind of dog you have.

Keep it real.

Take Kilo in - but get some puppy training classes going with him. I think you'd all be one happy family after a while - or they would all at least tolerate each other if nothing else.

Good luck with your decision.

Thank You V! I'm thinking if I can still get him that I'll try to get him a new home first then if not, the training and classes sound great

what a tough decision, spunky. i would take him anyway and try to find another home for him while looking out for the kitties as best as you can. Tie him up might work too as he wouldn'y be free to chase your cats.

Mate.... I think its worth a try.

German Sheps are among the best breeds and make really dedicated loyal friends.

A GS doesnt reach maturity till its almst 2 yrs old. They are very easily trained, exceptionally intelligent. The dog can be trained to be friendly with the cats. Not sure about the cats though.

If it doesnt work out, you can find him a safe nes home.

spunky11961 replies on 8/31/2006 1:25 pm:
Thanx Friend, exactly how I feel there, they are an exceptional breed for sure! Worth a shot just to keep him from being destroyed!

Spunky.....I would hate to be in your shoes, which I have been before. I think Henri and Tiffy would exact revenge on you if you brought this stranger into their realm! BUT, on the other hand.......damnit....I am not sure what to say. If this dog is only a year old , maybe he can be "Re-trained" to not hurt cats! It would take time but, time I think you would happily spend if it meant that Kilo could live....think about that!

Thanx Free that's pretty much what I'm thinking,if I can get him and get him a new home I will, if not I'll try the training route, but he will have to live outdoors~ Better than dead!

It's a tough call, man. I think you should do what you can for Kilo as long as you can keep your cats safe. Trying to introduce them could end in disaster as all dogs aren't afraid of a few scratches. This old Dalmation I had was like that and all the neighborhood cats that survived learned to give our yard a wide berth. He was always fenced in his own domain except when on a leash or our trips into the woods, but there were a few cats that got into his 'space' and never got the chance to regret it. Don't chance it with your own beauties. I hope you can think of a way to save Kilo.

This is a tough call. The pound is not an option if you don't want Kilo to die. You may either have to take him and train him to get along with your cats, or find someone that can take him. I know I'm basically repeating what everyone else is saying, but I'm pretty much echoing the sentiment. I have a dog. A black lab named Jack.

Come into my realm! You aren't afraid...are you?

spunky11961 replies on 8/31/2006 1:15 pm:
Thanx Nick,It's still all good advice,And I polan to try at least to get him a good home somewhere! Ya got a black lab named Jack? Wow as in Jack Black maybe? Really though I had one named Ebony, good dogs there!

has he been introduced to the cats in a controlled environment?
as he sooo young his behaviour with positive reinforcement methods could be improved around the cats?

never hurts to try....

best of luck!

What can I say, I love all animals. But, your cats were there first. It would be unfair to them to bring in a dog inside that hated them. Cats are easily traumatized. On the other hand, a German Sheppard with it's thick coat would probably rather be outside than inside. They really weren't intended to be house dogs. If you don't have a fenced in yard and had to keep him chained, I don't think he would be real happy. These dogs love to run. But, if the yard is fenced, and he can run, it wouldn't hurt to keep him until you found someone that you knew would be good to him and had a yard he would be safe in. To let one run lose is not a good idea, for one thing, if it should bite someone, you could have a law suit on your hands. Not to mention the possibility of it getting killed by a vehicle.
One idea would be to get him, put a sign in your yard saying "Free" and if anyone stops, find out something about them. He may just get a good home and your cats would be happy too!

spunky11961 replies on 8/31/2006 1:11 pm:
Thanx Silver that's what I plan to do If I can,Keep him chained and advertise him for free!

That sucks Bro,,,I would love to get a dog,,but ma said no. She has a poodle,,and she said that's all the dog we need. That really sucks,, because we don't have any cats and your dog could live here with me.

Thanx Bro, That's to bad there, but it's the thought that counts there eh? Kilo would probablely traumatize that poodle though

Can he be trained to get along with cats? My biggest concern is the degree to which the cats will be stressed out in the meantime.

It can be so tough being kind.

My guess is you'll chance it... good luck...
