happy 4th

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Farewell Address, January, 17, 1961

"This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence- economic, political, even spiritual- is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources, and livelihood are all involved. So is the very structure of our society.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military- industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will exist.

"We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together...

"Down the long lane of history yet to be written, America knows that this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate and be instead a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect. Such a confederation must be one of equals. The weakest must come to the conference table with the same confidence as do we, protected as we are by our moral, economic, and military strength. That table, though scarred by many past frustrations, cannot be abandoned for the certain agony of the battlefield."

You know it's funny... the conservatives want less government but a bigger military, while the liberals want more govenment with a smaller military. Only libertarians want the size, scope, and power of the entire govenment, military and all, to be reduced.
Objectively speaking then... are the libertarians the only ones who are principled?

sparkee58 replies on 7/11/2006 1:58 am:
power corrupts equally, all across the political spectrum.
i am a Teddy Roosevelt Bull Moose Progressive.
conservatives want less government?
they might show you that with one hand, but just look what's in the other.

Not to be facitious, but I always wondered how the "good" Germans felt in the late 30's as they watched a little man with a mustache march his country to it's doom.
Now I know.

Well, I believe Teddy wouldn't have felt that Bush was a Hitler. Just an observation. lol

sparkee58 replies on 7/15/2006 2:08 am:
i really don't know what teddy would have though of jr.

Look at the world stage. While bin Laden has been moving his knights around the board, Bush is scratching his head over the checkerboard in Iraq. The Middle east is afire, oil will soon hit 100$ per barrel and now Israel, rudderless without Sharon, has jumped in which will inflame islam even more.

No, I really don't know what Teddy, an actual warrior, would have thought of this bunch of chickenhawks.
But I can guess.

You know... the President is actually doing more than one thing at a time, just like every other president has. And Bush is not about to reveal all the operations that are going on behind the scenes in the war on terror, because it might risk peoples lives - despite the lure of moving up in the polls. He's honorable, and does what's right.
Still, I guess no good deed goes unpunished.

sparkee58 replies on 7/21/2006 1:23 am:
and we know how precious life is to this president.
