Gone Batty

The wife’s ongoing war against insects in and around the horse barn has taken two turns, both of which have entailed me doing the bulk of the work.
First was a purple martin house. That seemed easy: go to the store, buy a snap together purple martin house kit and a pole kit. She got the purple martin house snapped together okay, but then decided that the pole kit was way too short. So, we went questing for something to make a longer pole, and wound up with two pieces of 10’ long conduit, sized so one slips inside the other. Slip them together to the desired overall height, match drill holes for pins to keep them in the right place, drop into hole in concrete that used to hold an outdoor clothesline. Wait a minute, this is Kansas, so the purple martin house rotates in the breeze. No problem, just bracket the bottom of the pole to the concrete base.
The second turn in the war on insects was bat houses. She got a book on how to build your own, which really meant how your husband is supposed to build it. Mark I, Mod 0 was rejected because the plastic mesh wasn’t stapled down well enough and was curling up, blocking the entrances. So, dismantle that to remove the mesh and start on Mark I, Mod 1, which just scratches the plywood so the little varmints can get a toehold. Oops, now it needs to be re-stained, but we’re about out of stain. That’ll be a trip to the store, but not today. Meanwhile, the caulk isn’t coming off very easily, so it’ll just stay on for a while…maybe forever. That’s two tubes of caulk wasted. Most of the screws can be reused.
“And, they’re coming to take me away, ha, ha. They’re coming to take me away, ho, ho, hee, hee, ha, ha.”
