To my friends who have come and gone...I miss you

We came from many lands and many homes.
We were a kaleidoscope of races, a rainbow of colors.
While our histories were as varied as the stars,
We came together in this one land.

Washed upon its shores, by providence, like castaways,
Out of necessity we clung together.
We were captive animals finally free of the bonds of expectations.
Not knowing what to make of our new found freedom.

We wandered the fringes of our concrete jungle.
Most sought out the comforts of sameness, never fully leaving their gilded cages.
Some found the familiar, like long lost dreams that call to you in the waking hours.
Others still explored our new home to behold the many wonders that it offered.

One needed to venture but a little to be swept into our new world.
Feasts of unexpected bounties lay before us,
and our senses hungrily devoured them all.
Feasts of fruits and meat our mouths did consume.

But there were other feasts to partake as well.
Feasts of wine and song lay themselves at our feet
And feasts of flesh lay themselves at our beds
We found ourselves sent into a land of plenty.

Even with the Creator’s gifts of ability, strength, and wisdom,
We still longed for the land of our fathers and mothers. The land we called home.
One by one our friends of necessity dispersed.
Carried by the winds, to their lands carried in their hearts.

One by one, our friends were no more than the dreams of yesterday
Until at last I find myself wandering the beaches,
Where we first gathered that long ago winter eve.
I light a candle to wish my friends a God’s blessing in their voyage.

For within the plenty that still awaits me, an emptiness I find.
And the land of my people calls to me, my mother’s voice I hear,
But I await my fate’s decision, my purpose of being.
It is then I see, I am the last in line, last of my line, the last of my kind...
