The Outsider's Guide to Video Game Players

I think a lot of people have misconceptions about people that play video games. There's a stereotype out there that all game players are adolescent, acne-crusted, foul-smelling geeks with inch-thick glasses, and it's been my experience that this couldn't be more wrong.

Many people think video games are children's toys, but the fact is that the largest demographic of game players is between 18 and 32. Games are really like any other medium. Just like music or movies, some games are created for younger audiences and some are intended to appeal to adults.

Today's games also have a social aspect. Long gone are the days where playing games alienated people. It's a common occurrence to be talking to an opponent over a headset, or cooperating with a fellow player to achieve a common goal. I've even heard of gamer couples that used games as part of foreplay. Also, today's gamer is very aware of society's expectations, and grooms accordingly.

So why is it that when a potential mate hears that one of my hobbies is playing video games, their response is less than positive? Games involve much more than hand-eye coordination. They also test the player's ability to improvise, innovate, to think on their feet, and to be creative. In short, games involve many of the attributes needed to make an awesome lover.

I have spent a couple years working in the video game industry, and I can tell you that the best gamers are often the ones with the most sex appeal. How do they find mates? I asked a couple guys I used to work with and they both told me that they won't even mention the fact that they play games for a living until they've had sex at least once. Another one refuses to date anybody that he didn't meet inside of a game world.

Personally, I think everybody should play video games. They really are a superior form of entertainment because of the immersion and interactivity unique to the medium. Besides, if everybody played, perhaps my "WTS WANG x1 PST" t-shirt might get more than just a laugh.

What do you think of video gamers? Is there a game that gets you in the mood? Would you ever use a virtual world to find mates?
