WEEKEND BLAZE AT LOCAL NATURE RESERVE...

....Fire crews from Rathfriland were called upon, on Sunday to help tackle the accidental fire at the Murlough National Nature Reserve, where 600 square metres of protected land was destroyed.

The fire which threatened the fragile 5,000 year old sand dune system, heathland and woodland was battled by up to 50 firefighters, with appliances attending from Ballynahinch, Newry, Downpatrick and Rathfriland.

Murlough was declared Ireland's first nature reserve in 1967 and has since been cared for by the National Trust, providing a haven for wildlife and rare habitats, including badgers and stoats, the pyramidal orchid and even colourful butterflies to name a few.

That;s a REAL shame...

It;s absolutely breathtaking there...I love that beach...my fantasy...galloping down it when it;s deserted...hooves thundering in the surf...a girl can dream, can;t she???

in fact might head down there tomorrow...minus trusty steed (unless some of you folk live nearby and can lend me a mount)be a shame to let the afternoon go to waste after I wangled it off....
