Well the good news is that 'Honour Killings' are reducing in Turkey... the bad news that Honour Suicides are now up.

Honour Killings where clamped down upon (although not particularly hard) after the case of the poor woman who was , and then fell pregnant with the child thus bringing dishonour on her family who felt compelled to murder her. They shot her, but she survived, and so they had to kill her in the hospital. Honour was maintained.

Now the poor women are apparently killing themselves to preserve their family's honour; the latest one somehow shooting herself in the back of the neck, but more commonly they are locked in a room and told to do it or receive a worse fate.

Death before dishonour? The women in Turkey get it both.

Confused and not sure what your point is

I was told that Turkey is the most tolerant Muslim country.
How prevalent are honor killings? Are they rare?

Fair point - Turkey is a secular country, but religion (or rather some people's intepretation of it) still holds strong. I did not intend to sound anti-Turkish, far from it I think their joining the EU would be a good thing and could help make these practises a thing of the past.

In terms of prevalence, according to today's Times, worldwide male suicide is 3 to 4 times more common than female, in Turkey this statistic is reversed - Zelal Ozgokce, founder member of Va-Kad, a new women’s association in Van says that every other day they hear of such cases with around 20 confirmed "suicides" in the Van region alone this year.
