I'm still on a toilet kick here as, if you think about it, it has to be the invention that has had the most profound affect on modern civilization! Modern higher population densities just wouldn't be possible without them(not for long at any rate!)

Consider life in a large city if everyone in a 50 story block of flats (apartments) used the same outhouse. Or worse, if everyone emptied their chamberpots over the balcony as was still commonplace less than a hundred and fify years ago. It would bring a whole new meaning to the phase "morning rush hour".

I always feel sorry for the family and decendents of Thomas Crapper, he didn't invent the flushing loo but he did do much to popularise it and yet his name is crap (literally!). Mind you the slang "John" for toilet came from the John Douglas company of Cincinnati putting his name on his toilet for the American market.

Good loo's didn't come to England until the 18th century, yet in the Palace of Knossos on Crete is an efficient sewage system with wooden seats and 'wash-out' closet with reservoir - dating back to 1700BC. Incredible.

millions of people in south africa still use pit latrines and "the bucket system" -- trucks go round everyday to pick up the stuff from your bucket. i once went to stay at my step-mother's home village in rural zimbabwe.... there was no toilet, people just went in the veld (bush). to accomodate my fathers visits, they had made a hut with just a hole in the ground ... this is what i had to squat over...

when my husband was a kid..which isnt all that long ago they had no running water only an outhouse in the winter..and a 5 gallon pail in the basement with a toilet set on it..this was called the "honey bucket" and the septic trucks that come out to pump out the septic tanks are called "honey wagons"..all the "waste" from the farm here goes into a lagoon which is fenced off..we are still a lil primitive here in remote canada..

Caressmewell, thanks for the support!

Heavenly, No loo seat fetish (honest!)

Freelove and Saddletrampz you're quite right lack of flushing loo's is more recent - and indeed current in many places around the world, I don't envy your 'squatting' experience Freelove, but Saddletrampz we have plenty of Septictanks round here in Lincolnshire - although happily I don't own one!
