the prom and growth

Last night was my son’s first prom. He brought his date by and I realized I have never seen him in a suit before. He looked so tall and handsome in his black tux! His date was in a huge hurry, so the moment lasted less than 5 minutes. Yes, there are some photos. As I waited for him to get here with her, before that rapidly fleeting moment, I watched TV. Just to pass the time while I waited. They were late arriving, so I just happen to catch a few shows I would never have seen without this event. Ironically, both of the shows I watched, only for about 20 minutes worth, were shows I had watched with my son when he was but a small child, 17 years ago. In fact, one I would tape because it was on so late and then watch it with him the next day. At that time, with that show, he was still an infant. That show, “Headbanger's Ball” has changed a lot. The music was horrid and bloody awful and, well, that is just a matter of personal taste. No tears came to my eyes, just a stark realization: he is no longer a child. He is a young man. Also, I began to recall where I was at then and how much my life has changed since. Back then, I was just freshly divorced, living in my sister’s basement, having sex with a young woman, and still an alcoholic. That time, for perhaps a year before and a few months after, was my last big bingeing period, when my drinking turned sour. My, have I grown since! And so has he!

The other show? Cartoon called “The Tic.”

Well sweetie as you know it was my daughters first prom as well I got pictures of her and as I was driving back up the hill from taking her and her date to the High School. She made me leave. She saw the tears starting to rise. She smiled and said "Mom its my first prom, not my Senior Prom. No tears until next year

It hit me. She is going to be a Senior in a month. How she has grown into the beautiful woman that she is and how I as well as her Father has grown in the past 16 years. Her and her date from my home town were a beautiful couple.

Today I had some of those pictures that I took of them as well as the group of kids that I have watched grow up with her and claim as mine I fought tears again

The memories are great Thanks for sharing your story, I am very proud of you for the growth that you personally have made

Hugs, smooches and smiles sweetie
