Light bulb goes on....

Well friday was a hoot and a half....

A fair amount of people from the BC Chat Room came out for a meet and greet at a local pub in Coquitlam.

One thing, one of the chatters, whom has been attending meet and greets as a matter of course for a fair amount of time, says to me "It's really funny to see the lightbulb go on"

I didn't really understand, and now thinking back I understand what she is referring to.. You spend sometimes hours talking to people in chat... you understand and see their humour everytime you chat... however, you only see their profile pics which often only presents a part of them, quite often their perceived best feature...

When you meet a person that you have been chatting with for a while, you feel almost hesistant about talking to them, not really sure that this is the same person that you have chatted with in the room. Some people attend meet and greets and never meet anyone, too shy to break the buffer of being behind the computer so they choose to remain anonymous.

Anyhow, you screw up your courage and you speak to someone whom you aren't really sure that you know. They introduce themselves by their real life name and you kind of give them a blank look. Then they say their handle name...

Ohhhhh you are so and so.. OH god I am so happy to finally meet you!!!...

The light bulb goes on, your facial expression changes and your posture becomes less defensive.. you become more relaxed and easy going and you realize that this is someone you in fact already know.. you were just waiting to put a face to the name and personality that you have been talking to for so long.

Now it was brought to my attention also, that it is very intimidating being on the outside looking in, and thinking that these are all people that you would like to meet and get to know. It can seem cliqueish, but I can assure you now, no one there is meaning to be so. They just have met each other in the past and greet each other with the familiarity of old friends. So to you, a shy one I would say... Screw up your courage and give someone the chance to say to you.. And most likely they are going to say...

Ohhhh you are so and so? I am so happy to finally meet you!!!!

I do think it would be great to meet some of the wonderful people who blog here. And you are right...their real names wouldn't mean much to me!

Yes, and sometimes lighning strikes.

I can say that as a first-timer it IS really intimidating, especially when you're going there to meet someone. If you're an old-timer, make a special point of breaking the ice and get the newbies to sit down and talk.
