Dia de los Muertos

I'm obsessed with the festival Dia de los Muertos. In fact...if truth be told, my heart resides in New Zealand, but my soul belongs in Mexico.

I am drawn to things of the Indian of Central America, i read books, i devour the artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

i eat the food, i relish the colours..i'm immersed in the waters and driven to the colours of its earth..

In a rash moment last week, i decided to research some ideas floating round ...imagery of skulls and dancing skeletons i couldnt get out of my head.

I like things pertaining to the dead. In New Orleans the crypt burials of the dead because of being on the delta of a great river where the water table was high....the naturalised oasis of the great cemetaries like West Norwood in London the uncontained splendor (but very regemented tour) of Highgate Cemetary... something draws me to them and to the culture of the dead. I particularly like the fesivity of Dia de los Muertos which is why i find myself drawn to get down in paint what i see...

that in itself is strange...paint is not a medium i use...i'm more three dimensional and a photographer...so..on the side i'm making a tableau...a box..a scene....small ...contaned...a miniature set and Dia de los Muertos themes heavily in here too..

Sigh...one day...i will go...but for now i travel in my dreams to the land that captures my soul...
