hedonism&stuff

I was a young woman when I read a magazine article or short story about an American in Italy just whiling her time away, going shopping, taking long lunches, drinking wine. Apparently she had shed her American Puritanical ways and come to the realization that taking vast pleasure in everyday life was not a sin. I can't remember anything more about the story, just this one idea. I thought, God, you mean I don't have to neglect my family beating my head against the wall to make as much money as possible (my Dad) or saving the world single-handedly (my Mom)?? I could just kick back, enjoy my time on the planet, and be HAPPY?
It's hedonism to me. Enjoying it all. Food, wine, sex, but also the changing of the seasons, my wonderful grown children, doing my job well.
Better than drinking body shots at Hedo for a week a year. Better than pursuing the swinging lifestyle to the point you can't remember who all you screwed. Maybe even better than following the sun in a boat a la Jimmy Buffett (well the jury's still out on that one). What's it mean to you?????
Just asking

I do believe you've got it right. The magazine article you mentioned brought to mind a great movie about abandoning puritanical ways...Babette's Feast...worth watching.

I recall a book title from Freud, "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" My response was why go beyond it? Most don't seem to have that much pleasure... I say how come?

Indeed, Babette's Feast, total hedonism, devotion to food - without any sex, just one chaste kiss. Food, wine, sex, changing of the seasons - all wonderful, especially as you have responsibly raised your children. Just so nobody else gets hurt . . .

redmustang,
yes I agree, most people don't get a lot of pleasure out of life...sad. I think it's sometimes in one's attitude, although not all the time for sure. Some get dealt a crappy hand.
I am curious about Freud's book. maybe I can read a synopysis of it somewhere...doubt I'll read the whole book!!
Thanks for stopping by

Mailman, I can see I'm going to have to rent Babette's Feast. The food theme reminds me of another movie, Under the Tuscan Sun. She cooked up a storm. It is a pleasure to cook especially during the winter, pair with the perfect wine, mmmmm, pure pleasure.
Thanks for visiting!!

More and more, I question the values of this country which I served ,and dearly love . For some reasom, violence is more acceptable then sex . Is the the Inquistion to be reinvented ?
Better stop now, before I go off on a tangent with political crap .
Time to change gears ,and get back into a sexual mindset .Sex is much more pleasant .

I want a 35 foot sail boat on the Caribean Sea, with a laptop, a satelite uplink, and my wonderful girlfriend. Until then, I'll continue to take pleasures in the little things.

Citizen, thanks for stopping by. Your wish for the sailboat in the Carribean sounds pretty much like our own. Maybe someday we'll meet you two in some sunny island port.
Til then...cheers!!

Babette's Feast - truly one of my favorites. To enjoy life at every turn - fully. It is a tonic that once discovered never leaves. For this I am grateful.
Life is what happens while you are waiting for it to happen - make the most of it.
Cheers!

We're funny creatures who are verrrry complex. We have many sides that need nourishment. We work hard, love as best we can and hopefully spend as much time learning about life as possible. We definately need the nourishment hedonism gives our soul without (like you say) giving our lives over to it. No need for guilt. Indulge, share and enjoy. Be renewed and be alive! We're all better for it.

Openup, thanks for the very nice comment. You are actually closer to us than you know (mysterious I know). What do you do with your time?
Maybe when summer's done I'll blog again...too nice now

I love being passive (music and reading) and active (hiking/walking, kayaking, socializing). I love meeting people. I have moved down from the northern Finger Lakes and can use some guidance and insight. I love sharing time with smart, fun people and would love to spend time shooting the breeze and picking that impressive mind of yours. I also work hard, so maybe that makes play time all that more precious.

Do you visit the local nudist resorts by chance? I just went for the first time this weekend (wrote a review on my blog) and found it sinfully delightfull. A little slice of heaven in the woods.
