God money: the not so new religion

What is it that is so friggin' fascinating about money to people? Throughout time people have attempted to accumulate obscene quantities of the stuff. In the modern era it's practically adopted the same status as a God albeit worshipped in different ways than those of Judaism and the Hindu faith.

I've never really understood this obsession most Americans seem to have with the "almighty" dollar. Yeah, it's nice to have cash, but there are certainly more important things in life. Money is merely a tool that makes life easier. I certainly don't get accumulating more than you will ever use in one lifetime.

I understand the money can bring power with it. But this new diety only has the power we assign to it. If humans were not so greedy for cash then money would not yield power the way it does. Someone must want what you're offering to bribe them with in order for quid pro quo to be effective after all...........

I don't want money I just want a house we all fit in, but can't get one without the other *sigh* hoping the sky gods drop half a mil in my lap then we might be able to afford a house big enough, yes seriously that's what it will cost for us to get a big enough house til now there has always been things more important or more urgent

Personally, it would be nice to never have to bust my ass for anyone else ever again. But I don't get the cash hoarding ways of many people. The American dream is starting from scratch and getting rich, so I guess part of it is programmed. People who are driven by material gains ultimately lead empty lives.

I definitely agree with everyone here, but ultimately: Try living life without it. Not much fun, eh? And that's the unfortunate thing. I mean you can have an enriched life without money but like my sweetie said, it's a tool to make life easier and more comfortable for us.

My moto is that you can't take it with you, so you might as well enjoy it while you have it. Do good with it...not evil. SO many people are moeny driven for THE WRONG REASONS. I have all this stuff running through my head about this because it's something I have a strong opinion about, but I am too flustered right now to go on.....

Perhaps its a sort of addiction, once you have a little you just have to get a little more and on and on. I do agree its just a tool to facilitate the exchange of goods. You do have to save and plan and be smart with it but accumulating far more than you need is wrong. Why is that those who seem to make the most money are the one's handling it? I mean do they work harder than someone driving a bus or swinging a hammer?

smileguy, you raise a VERY good point. Who decides who gets paid what? I mean I constantly hear people complaining about teachers being underpaid and I often hear the same thing around the firehouse. Yet I also realize that if we paid these people more then we'd have to deal with people getting involved in the profession merely for the pay. Is this why the salaries are kept low? Hmmm. Perhaps I may do a separate blog on this one.
