Playing Hookie

She says - We’re still learning a good deal about one another. And just to spice things up today, we introduced our kids to each other as well. My son and I are the visitors for a few days, and he chose to pull his two kids out of school for the day so they could have fun playing hookie. So what do you do with three boys in the middle of winter?

Ever been snow tubing? We hadn’t, but I can now highly recommend it! We went to a resort where they have a hillside dedicated to tubing enthusiasts, in case such people needed a place to congregate. Picture giant inner tubes with handles on either side, similar to the kind you might tow behind a ski boat. You take a seat on the tube, grab hold of a tow line that pulls you about 150 yards up hill where you await your turn for launch.

A straight shot downhill might be fun enough, barring the sound barrier that would be shattered near the end of the run. But this place was groomed so that the ride was more like something from an amusement park, winding back and forth with embankments rising up 25 feet to accommodate the high arc you managed on the curves. The whole trip down takes about one and half heart pounding minutes. So much fun, that the kids must have gone down 20 times each, with the adults accomplishing half that.

Who thinks up a place like that? And what kind of guy thinks it makes a suitable destination for a play date? This character did, and I don’t know how we could have had more fun. Not only was it an opportunity to see him at play with kids, it gave me some insight into the youth and energy he still has inside him. He’s just an oversized kid after all, and he makes me feel younger too.

As our afternoon wound down and we made our way back to the car, the topic of dinner came up. He asked my son to name his favorite meal, then followed up by suggesting that macaroni & cheese might not be considered a complete dinner. With a little more thought, my son conceded that he did enjoy Chinese food. Without a Chinese restaurant in our town, it has been one of his favorite parts of visiting my family elsewhere.

To the suggestion of Chinese food, his boys erupted in cheers of approval. At this point, I was thinking that they must have one really good restaurant nearby. But that was just an invitation to another surprise. After a quick yet thorough run to the grocery store, he had all the trimmings to fix dinner at home.

This is apparently not an unusual set of circumstances in his house, as his kids immediately took to unloading the groceries and prepping the kitchen when we arrived at their home. That gave the two of us an opportunity to change clothes and recount some of the highlights of our afternoon while sprawled across his bed. I didn’t say the words to him, but I felt so incredibly welcome and in loving company. Another wonderful surprise.

I haven’t tasted the finished product yet. Dinner is still cooking, but I must admit it smells fantastic. My son is in awe because he’s never seen a man spend time cooking. And he’s intrigued by the way his boys move fluidly between video games and setting the table or helping out in the kitchen. Frankly, so am I. He’s raising two kids that are more domesticated than most of my girlfriends.

I can hardly wait to see what surprises are still in store.

She says - Mz Pink, the scary thing is we met on this site. And in previous incarnations, you stumbled over both of us. Unofficially, we agree you are most likely our number one fan. Thank you!

"Do you remember the time..." You'll hear that many times, from you children and they'll be smiling. You two are making really good memories, living in the moment.

Pictures, Luvn. We have to take more pictures! And we're both dying to post something really embarrassing about the other. That's living!

Men who cook aren't that odd... but I'm glad that the one you have is appreciated.
