Scorpions are getting bolder -- this is war!!!

I have declared war on the scorpions today. One had the nerve, the sheer audacity, to crawl on my forearm last night while I was chatting with an AdultFriendFinder member online last night!!!

I quickly brushed him off and ran for my trusty tennis shoe, but by the time I was back it was gone!!! I got out my huge camping latern and put it under the computer desk... it was no where to be found!!!

I was up for hours afterwards seeking out this intruder in my home and listening to the AdultFriendFinder member continue our conversation on the phone calmed me down a bit...and eventually I was able to get some sleep early this morning....

now I have definately declared war!!!!!!

Now, hmmm... maybe I will get that black light and see if they really do glow in the dark as one AdultFriendFinder member posted on my earlier scorpion posts!!! lol.... That actually may give me nightmares for the rest of my life!!

Any other tactics suggested?????

Do they make tazer guns to kill the scorpions???

Can I string them up???? Get the rope!!

yagottalikit - Well this is my first summer with so many. I talked with a maintenance guy who is a husband of a gal I know at work... he says that they are coming through his light fixture at his apartment but getting fried by the light bulbs and stuck in the light fixtures!! Thank goodness, I don't have to look up and see dead scorpions too!!!....

SDMC246 - Actually I have a cat....sooooo, I guess I should let Leo loose in my room. I have been keeping him at bay because I have a condition on my legs as a result of a car accident last year that his scratches can be devastating....but it will probably be worth the risk....

Voltinier - Yes, I am pretty sure that the nearby Highway constructions projects are much at a culprit for my recent scorpion problems today....

DaphneR - Oh, that is an excellent idea about the county extension office. Will do that first thing in the morning.... Best thing though for fire ants is flour, though!!! lol... I used to see Boric Acid around the stores a lot more; haven't seen it in quite a few years though. With my luck, they have taken it completely off of the shelves just like sooooo many of the things that I find that truly work well!!!

dallaswill101 - lol....

alice593 - Not sure what that would be.... I have never seen a scorpion eat anything, have you????

Having lived here in the Dallas area for most of my life, I am qutie familliar with the situation you are having. While scorpions will generally stay away from people for the most part, sometimes things stir them up and they move indoors. Usually construction projects near by are the cause. As to the cure, the blacklight idea is sound for the type we have here. This does not work on all scorpions, but ours here it does. If you happen to get stung, one of the best ways to relieve the sting, is baking soda and water mixed to a thick paste and applied liberally on the spot of the sting. The venom is an acid and the baking soda will neutralize it. Just let the mix stay on till it hardens and falls off. (This works great for fire ant bites as well by the way) If your appartment will let you, and you like them a cat is a great idea as well, especially a kitten since they will play with anything that moves.

You poor thing - and I mean this with all sincerity. I won't make light of your problem. I am a native of AZ, and I have been battling these AdultFriendFinder all my life. I have been stung so many times I can't even count (but better me than the kids). One night before I had an important interview, I was stung 3x before I knew what happened... I proceeded to limp, drool, spasm and speak as if I had CP throughout the interview the next day.

What you can do? Unfortunately not a whole lot, that is if you expect to spray something and forget about it. Their exoskelton makes them almost immune unless you spray them directly. However, there are some things you can do...

*First of all, if you have an overgrown yard, woodpiles, mounds of weeds, leaves, etc, CLEAN IT UP IMMEDIATELY!

*The blacklight is a good one. The best way is to proactively search for them - both inside and outside. Show no mercy - KILL THEM ALL! You get one bad mama with babies inside your house (she carries them on her body), then you will have a problem.

*I have had friends who have used Hawaiian Geckos or iguanas to hunt them down... you just let them have the run of the house. This seems to work only if you have tile or wood floors, and if the idea of reptiles running free in your house doesn't bother you.

*Get a cat... get a couple of cats if you have a big house. This has been my solution. Cats won't necessarily solve the problem as some are lazy - they might just play with them for a bit w/o killing them - but most will be attracted to little critters running along the floors and walls. However, you must do your part also: anytime you see the cat definitely occupied and you don't know what it is, get off your tail and check it out. Anyway, I have had good luck with this... not counting the time the time the cat found one and proceeded to bat it around until it landed in my lap.

Good luck and happy hunting!

awwww hell......we get them in our house every least one or two. Last year my major plumbing project stirred up an entire nest. We killed 1 or 2 a day for several weeks! Wear shoes, always. And the Boric acid advice is sound. Just a fact of life around here.

Yagotta get it soft and wet so we can kick/stick it

txrose, look up on the computer what they like to eat, and maybe you can find out what kind of bait to use to lure them stingy creatures into the traps.

I use a small portable vacuum cleaner with 1 or 2 long attachments for reaching up high, down low. That way you can be 3 feet away and vacuum the scorpions/spiders/etc. safely.

I know they sell boric acid in Texas, my parents had it. Probably got it at Home Depot or someplace like that. Another good thing you can do, since you are in Texas, is call your County Extension Agent. The number should be in the book. They can give you help and advice on all kinds of things relating to bugs and such. I know when I was out there and had fire ants real bad I could buy Amdro from them at cost, which was about a fourth of what the stores charged.

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

alice593 - probably the mice traps shaped like boxes might work for these huge scorpions, but what would you use for bait???? And, believe you and me, I am checking all my clothes and shoes before I put them on... double check the shower b/4 I step in... shake out my towel b/4 I dry myself off.... etc, etc....

pASSionwantd2 - I sure wouldn't want to be in love with these creatures!! eeeewwwww ... lol...

cajunpet - You know something, I am not sure who sells that anymore around here. I haven't seen that being sold in Texas for a long time...but, I am sure there is SOME place that does....

DaphneR - Oh, definately done... I have even taken my bedspread off for the time beting... I am not taking any chances....

bobray54 -

frbnkslady - I can handle the spiders MUCH easier than the scorpions...soooo, I'll trade you!!!

mmm_mmm_good54 - If that had been the first one that I have seen here, I probably would have... lol..!!!

cajunpet - In Texas... that only gets you evicted!!!

mi_mwpm - NORMALLY, this isn't a think that we deal with often in Texas!!

That would have probably even given me heart failure. Maybe you could get one of those traps where you tie a small mouse in it, and when the scorpion get in it would trip a mechanism to close the door behind it. Bet you had your Friendfinder friend going, when all of this occurred. Lordy be. Make sure you check you shoes before you put them on. My wife has a sister who lives near Dallas, and we plan on visiting her in the near future. Will have to watch out for those creatures. Her daughter has been visiting upteenmillion colleges, to see where she wants to go. She is in her senior year of high school this coming fall. Would like to meet such a sweet woman as you. Maybe my wife and I could, when we are down there. More than likely next June.

One thing I'd suggest until they are gone. Make sure that your bed clothes don't touch the floor ... if you have a bedskirt on, pull it off for now. Less chance of one of the little beasts crawling into bed with you.

My opinion is insecticide does NOTHING. I've found some info. using boric acid. Sprinkle on base boards, cracks, in a plastic container (will kill roaches)down the drain, sprinkled on carpet (for fleas) ANYWHERE where these alien creatures have been found, sprinkle BORIC ACID there!

Scorpions are seeking comfort from the heat and for water. That is why you see them in drain pipes and they do not come in from drain pipes.

Take care.

(shudder) Makes me glad I live in Michigan... scorpions aren't something I want to have to worry about while walking around the house barefoot.

I would withhold or threaten to withhould my rental payment until the property managers corrected the situation completely, might help in getting the problem resolved in a more timely fashion.

Take care.

cumtounge44 - Hey, I live in apartments... if I send them to my neighbors, they will find their way back to my place.

TehTigerLily - Want them back??? I have never seen so many in my life!!!

Lipator - True!!! I have reported the incident again to the apartment managers. I am on the list for the pest control people to come out next Wednesday.... Honestly, I think that they are feeding them instead of killing them!!!

harshawj - If you have some... send it immediately!!! hee hee....

Certainly hope you get the critters. I once saw gasoline and a lot of fire used but I suspect you want your bed to sleep in still. I hope you can come to some long term arrangement with the property managers. It is not good practice to let these things scare (or even worse bite) their tenants.

You might also want to check under your sinks, showers, and toilets. They like to hide in dark cramped spaces, so if you have closets full of crap, *shivers* might be hiding in there. And if theres one, theres a family.. We have scorpions here in Vegas, and I junp 100ft in the air when I see one *shivers again*
