Charlie Wonka...

Went to see a movie today with my 17yo daughter at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas wherein we saw the Charlie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Now, it was good (and a bit on the dark side).... but it is hard to follow in Gene Wilder's shoes; Johnny Depp does a good job. However they spoiled the songs in trying to modernize them. They should have left the songs alone b/c the songs they had in the movie were largely uninterpretable....mumbled... jumbled....a mess.

I liked the beginning in this version of the movie better b/c it really offers to explain more about Willy; however, the ending could have been a little better drawn up.

Oh, well.... even though it is hard to outdo the version with Gene Wilder, it did well enough to entertain us tonight.

BTW, I tried to order the Sunshine Wheat beer there...but they were out of it!! Instead I got the Hoegaarden beer in a mug with lemon... and it was a fruity beer!! Never had a fruity beer before, but is was okay!!.... (daughter had Budweiser...)!!!

PillsburyCodeBoy - Oh, me too... I heard about it, but thought that they had just given up on the idea, until a huge fan of Johnny Depp's told me that he was going to be coming out with a new version of this. Funny, though, how you do suddenly find yourself seeing more kid movies when you have kids of your own. Perhaps, this is merely justification for ourselves to not ever be grown up or too old for kid movies to satisfy the kid in us each and every day....

alice593 - Just keep mind that it is going to be a bit on the darker side.... but, it is entertaining.

Yes, I saw Willie Wonka, and it was a blast. Was planning on seeing this one with my wife just to see how it compared. Saw the previews in the new Galaxy Cinema here, and may see it this weekend.

I saw the movie this weekend with my ten-year-old. I agree with your assessment, Rose, especially regarding the songs. I couldn't make out a word of them, and that's just wrong.

I've never seen the original. It came out when I was 14 and had decided I was too old to see kids' movies anymore. I had to wait until I had a kid to start watching kids' movies again.

The remake was in development for a long time. I remember hearing Hollywood gossip 10 years ago that they were going to remake it. The first person I heard of being considered to play Willy Wonka was Christopher Walken. He's too old now, but at one point, he would have made an interesting choice. I would have liked to have seen that movie.

wert59 - Well, the theatres were sold out. The third theatre had a smaller showing at 5 minutes after the other started at the same theater. We opted for the smaller showing and yet, we had to sit on the front row. Oh, well... We were entertained for the evening and it was a first time for me to go to that type of movie theater. Overall, not a bad experience; however, I have to agree...the first version is far better in my book.

SensuallyKatey - Meeeee too!! They loose so much in the remakes....although, I honestly liked the beginning of this one better...
