Tattoo...controversial or not?

I'm old enough to be unsure about if I should get a tattoo now...what's your thoughts on it? I've always been fascinated by them...there's just this old voice in my head telling me not to do it...someone way back talking about "defacing the temple of God" and our bodies being a temple.

Anyone got any real meat on what that's about?

My kids have tat's and piercings all over the place, so does that mean they are adorning and decorating, or are they defacing the temple?

If you need your temple to be free from blemish or uniqueness, then I probably wont worship there.

Tatoos are older than Christianity and have represented different things to thousands of cultures. You'll probably find more by looking online or talking to a tattoo artist. Your kids however, may just be following a trend.

I would not completely state that they are defacing their temple... I have heard "If you don't respect your temple (pussy) then no man will respect it either" could that be another form of defacing..oops that for another discussion!
I do have both, its about preference & my ONLY advice very SURE of the design, it will be there FOREVER and most of all attempt to NOT put someones name (except yours, parents or children=these are the only guaranteed ones to be yours for LIFE!)

You have to go with your gut instinct, I have a very small one on my shoulder blade that I cant see, I had it mainly to shut my husband up after a few years of nagging, I dont dislike tats and mine is never hidden but it really is personal choice, I just didnt like being bullied into it

Its beautiful to have a go out and get one today! You'll thank me later!

I have twelve and I don't regret it a bit. Both ankles and arms are circled with them, I get funny looks sometimes but most of the time it doesn't bother me. The body is a temple means do not destroy it with drugs and disease. I don't think God cares about a little decoration.

Hi Truely,
My grandmother used to tell me that saying all the time, so I understand where you are coming from. However, many things from relgion, especially Christianity, is open to interpretation. **sidenote(This statement may raise a few eyebrows, and for those "holyer than thou" then explain to me why there are Catholics, Baptists, Methodist, Prespatarian, Eposcopal etc...)

Personally I feel that the "temple" refered too is not the body itself, but rather the mind and actions. Jesus rarely taught the masses in a building or temple but rather outside or in private homes and it was about God's love and compasion...not about what one is supposed to do and not do, the only thing Jesus ever said must be done is to be born again. When he did go balistic in the temple it was because the inside had turned into a flea market, and "den of thieves" (Matthew 21:12), or check out John 2:14-25.

Personally, I beleive the body as a temple comes from the old testament such as Ezekiel where the priests had to adhere to a strict set of rules like only wearing linen in the temple, they couldn't be in the presence of a dead person and return to the temple for 7 days, or eat dead birds or animals that had died of natural causes or by each other.

When a tattoo has personal meaning and thought behind it then it is and adornment. When it's just something that one does because their friends did it on spring break, out of rebellion or whatever, then to me it's just grafitti. And tatted names? unless it's a relative that has passed like a parent or child, FORGET IT...that relationship will more than likely be over with a quickness, I've seen it too many times. There is actually a tattoo that is a tattoo artist working on a guy's arm and this long list of women's names with a line through them as the artist is inking another name. I also wouldn't recommend inking your intials in Asian symbols, you know what you intials are and no one else can read it anyway.

I say if the design means something to YOU, GO FOR IT! If your doing it for someone else, have them get it done. For the record, I have several pieces of ink, all of mine are my concepts and designed by the only two artists I've ever had work on me, Apache Jane, and Cherokee Big Bob.

Enough meat for ya? lol....

I have to agree with bccclasmate, there's nothing wrong with looking sexy, a tatto can most of the time just add to the sexyness.
