8 seconds -or- why search engines and cell phones make a great combo.

6 - state lines
10 - area codes
51 - counties
2100 + miles

When I was in high school, my girlfriend and I had another female friend, we'll call her Louise, who went out with us on probably most of our dates. And for some reason, it wasn't weird. I just made sure I dropped her off first. Anyway...

Louise is one of the only people I still talk to from high school. And it's been 6 years since I've talked to her. And I got to thinking....

So I did a people search and after a few tries found a phone number that I was pretty sure to be hers. Had the right name, middle initial, age, it was all there. I grabbed my cell phone and called the number. Hit SEND...

one 1000
two 1000
three 1000 *ring*
four 1000
five 1000
six 1000 *ring*
seven 1000
eight 1000

"Hey! How's it going!" she answered, her caller ID giving away the surprise. "How have you been?"

"Good!" I explain.

The first time I looked at my call timer it said 45 minutes. We ended up talking for 73 minutes. And it sounded like I caught her on one of those days where she could really use a surprise.

So now you're sitting here reading this saying "what the hell are you trying to say tires? we all know how a damn phone works!"

It's not what I did, it's where I went. I crossed state lines, county lines, and countless miles. I know I did, because not once in those 73 minutes, did I think about work, bills, blogs, why I haven't fixed my chimney yet, What am I going to do with that little strip of grass out front, nothing. I was able to take a trip, cross space and time, and catch up with a very good person who I am honored to consider a friend. It was a journey in my mind, as I was informed of all the things in the neighborhood that have changed, how so-and-so's doing, what ever happened to this, or that, how tall her kids are, how funny looking mine are, how much she loves her new job, we covered it all.

But I definitely wasn't here. Strange thing is, I never had to leave my chair.

It took just eight seconds.

"If our friendship depends on things like space and time, then when we finally overcome space and time, we've destroyed our own brotherhood! But overcome space, and all we have left is Here. Overcome time, and all we have left is Now. And in the middle of Here and Now, don't you think that we might see each other once or twice?"

Ain't this technology cool stuff? I just wish I had some relationships with that kind of longevity.

Great post.

Yep...gotta love TECNOLOGY...I do. Have you ever wondered what goes on in the minds of people to "scared" to operate a computer or a cell phone....

I told my EX boss.. who shall be referred to for the rest of my life and also during this comment as the "cunt"... anyway.. I told said "cunt" once during a little bit of a debate on the use of the internet and computers in general...and I said.. "well, ya know Cunt...it's the way of life..it's the way of the future....and if ya don't keep up.... You'll be left behind"...to which she stared at me blankly...and just sorta nodded her head...kinda like one does when you hear something that you don't like or want to believe...but deep down you know it's the truth. Yep...that nod.

Not only do a I have a gazillion dealership regular work stories...but I have almost that many "stupid" ex-co-workers who are computer illiterate stories too.

It's so cool you found your friend...and so cool you went on a mini vacation w/out having to pack for it...haul it somewhere, catch a plane... get picked up.... whew... wears me out just thinkin about it.
