What's In A Name? What Were These Guys Thinking?

Being of advanced years–I remember my PC blog–I often have trouble remembering things. Not major things like where I live, or when to pee, but small stuff. Like why am I in this room? Or, who was I going to call? And the worst, what the hell is their number? Cell phones make remembering number worse too.

I had to resort to admitting failure and grab the phone book. As I was rummaging around for the exact spelling, I started noticing the last names. As I frequently do, I got off on a tangient about Surnames. Their meanings for example.

There are some really obvious urname meanings like Barber...medieval times he was a surgeon and later the cutter of hair. Or Barnes...one who lived near a barn. Here is a mini-list of some names and their meaning.

Fisher - given to fishing
Tailor/Fuller/Tucker/Walker - dresser of cloth
Rzeznik - Polish for butcher
Wojak - Polish for soldier
Zhaante - Arabic for pubic hair
Miller - given to grinding of grains

Many many last names have a logical explanation of the origin. What immediately leaped out at me...what the hell is the origin of some of the other names?

Fuchs - must have been given to fuching I suppose
Lawless - probably started by some of my shirt tail relatives
Cockburn - hmmm, bad day at the OK corral?
Hancock - medieval for bachelor?
Schitz - given to massive burrito consumption?
Peacock - given to small member?
Longbottom - yikes
Hoar - the local madam?
Bush - given to moronic decision making?
Muckenfuss - what the hell were they smoking?
Przybysz - Allergic to vowels? Actually, I'm told this one is Polish and pronounced phonetically "She-Bish" ... sure it is.

OK, it's on...who did I miss?

Hmmm, if we translate my last name I think I'm in the wrong business....may need to look up Miss Cleo and learn about the psychic biz.

ROFLMAO Daphne...that is one of my all time favorites! Why on earth wouldn't one consider a name change. Even Lipcaca is an improvement.

Hey TDA, true story! In high school I knew a girl named D. Giucy, Italian, I think. She married a guy named W. Gash. Good thing she was smart enough not to hyphenate her last name after the marriage......

Somewhere back in the generations of my family, I had an aunt and uncle who had 6 kids. They had 3 girls whom they named Rose, Lily and Pink. They had 3 boys whom they named Fart, Fizzle and Stink. This is not made up. I have heard about it from family for years. I wouldn't really want to claim being related to them if they were around in this day and age.

Talldark, Mr. Highcock was a fellow employee. He went missing, no call, no show and never heard from again. No idea if he deserved the name or not.

I worked with a guy named Michael "Mike" Hunt. Had to be very careful when making a page over the speakers to use his full name.
