Wanted Immediately: Fresh Cache Of Heros

With the unfortunate passing of Peter Jennings yesterday I had to stop and reassess my thoughts about famous people in my life. They're disappearing.

John Wayne, Golda, the Mahatma, Churchill, and Shemp...they're all gone. I shall assume the position of the elder member in here, in my lifetime I have seen so many of the classic personalities pass on and I'm saddened.

Who is in the wings to replace them? Also important...who is in the wings music wise?

Somehow the thought of my kids sitting in their 40's and 50's and looking back nostalgically at Fifty Cent is a tough bird to swallow. Ah yes...Puffy...The Early Years. Ohhhh, remember back before Eminem realized he was a skinny white kid? That was good stuff.

Well we do have the Rolling Stones I guess. But I'm thinking they need to get a little more real. Rework the lyrics to Satisfaction. (Sing along with the Satisfaction melody) I can't Get No...Big Erections. Now there's nostalgia you can sink your teeth into.

Who's going to replace Edward G. Robinson? Ben Stiller? Or Spencer Tracy? Or my absolute favorite sexiest woman ever...Katherine Hepburn?

We need some new bigger than life heros. Hmm, now where to look? I know...what about next door?

Is ther a bigger hero than the single mom that works two jobs and still manages to take her son to baseball practice 3 nights a week?

What about the reverend that plops his church right smack dab in the middle of the ghetto and actually turns around lives?

Naw, who wants reality? We need big big stars to worship. I know I love fake teeth, fake boobies, and the common sense of a gerbil talking politics to me. We NEED BIGGER THAN LIFE Stars!

The new heros will arrive, just not for our generation! Just as in every generation before us, the heros rise then the members of the generation watch in dismay as they start dropping with age until it is their turn. Crap!!! this is depressing! lets go back to talking about getting the occasional sexual escapades that float our way at our age! We will go the way of our heros soon enough - that is the way of it. But I ain't goin' anywhere for awhile! Blog on brother.

Vixen you're right. I hate it that we are doomed into this position. OK, someone has to be the future star and yet is still with us...who is it? Hmmm...wonder if it's Louie Anderson?

Modern media ensures there are no more heros.

Back in the early and mid 1900s, there were no super men, but some men seemed larger than life because the press wasn't trying to reveal every single scar, zit, character flaw, and sin a person committed. If anything, in some cases, the press helped to gloriy and elevate certain folks.

You won't see that happen today. The media will not let us have any heros. We are supposed to worship the TV, not the people we see on it.

Geez Jay, I forgot about Mighty Mouse. I'm so embarrassed. He was my hero for so many years. I finally ditched the Mighty Mouse T-shirt in high school. Didn't get laid much then either. I should have seen the pattern!

5 speed...you mean the media is trying to manipulate us? I've never heard anything so outrageous in my life!! If that was true...The Enquirer would have said so! You better check your facts buster. BTW...you're black listed.

My biggest hero is still alive and kicking, Clint Eastwood.

sad but true TDA1, it's not about heroes anymore, it's about optics and marketing. Maybe the guy in the chair is helping kids understand life and responsibility, but we can't use him to sell shoes. You won't see the struggling single Mom in a bucolic KD & fried baloney for Christmas dinner commercial..........

Madness takes its toll. Exact change please!

Sad but true PNS. There has to be a way we–as a people–can realign our priorities and those we embrace. But how?

Our heros are all around us, we don't need the hype to make them so.

If you asked who my hero was I'd tell you it was a man I met in January of 2002, who after 20 some years of dealing with endless pain and wounds that just wouldn't heal because of nerve damage from an accident decided to have his leg amputated below the knee. A year and a half after having had the surgery he rode a bicycle from Washington State to Florida, stopping along he way to talk to other amputees. Not only did deciding to go ahead and have the surgery take an enormous amount of courage, to take on the task of riding a bike cross country when most of the rest of the world would see him as handicapped is certainly more than I would consider myself capable of doing. So yeah, he's my hero.

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

Anemone I agree. Role model are a fading breed I fear. Unless we look around past all the hype. Thank you for this input, good thinking material.

Good calls, Anemone Sandra Day especially. I will certainly miss her.

Ivana must be having a great time laughing at The Donald.
All the way to the bank.

Thanks for mentioning Shemp Howard. The man does not get enough credit after brothers Moe, Curly, and the non-related Larry Fine. The media tries to create heroes every half hour. It really is sad, but the Paris's and Nicoles of the world may be around for far too long. Def.

Music-wise, I nominate... Fleetwood Mac! Of course, we still have Pink Floyd & Led Zepplin (even though neither band is touring anymore as far as I know).

Movie-wise, my vote goes to... DeNiro, Mel Gibson, John Travolta, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Sean Connery, etc. (I think I may have voted too many times!)

As far as "bigger than life" heroes are concerned... I agree with you, TDA! The people who truly need to be recognized & honored are the ones you would never expect. They are not celebrities, they are not musicians, they're not politicians (that's for DAMN sure!), they are regular people like you and me! For instance, you can always worship me! I don't mind! lol

Daphne, if only the media would focus on this type of mindset. We all need that regular dose of "anti-woe is me". A true inspiration may lurk around many corners for many people.

Defiant...I've always had a spot for Shemp. A career in a brother's shadow is a tough ride.

Good point on the Hilton clan et al...what are we thinking?

Luvsex you said a mouthful! Our fighting men and women represent all the best in God & Country. No matter the politics that put them where ever they may be, they are there giving their lives, limbs, and often their future for us and our ideals.

Anemone, what a potentially horrid blow the Reeves family has been dealt. All too often I think I have it rough in an area or two. How lucky I really am.
