Just Exactly What IS Friendship?

I'm not sure if you happened on this news item, but it sure warmed me up. Right next door in South Bend, Indiana the University of Notre Dame held a Cavalcade of Wheels custom car show this past weekend.

Seems a whole bunch of guys took their late 30's buddy, who just returned from Iraq, to the car show. Low and behold...what does this young man discover? HIS late 60's Barracuda...completely restored...in the show. He wept.

Can you imagine, a group of friends taking a car with no doors. No interior. No hood etc. and completely restoring it as a welcome home surprise? I want to hang out with these guys. Who doesn't? This incredible act of kindness did start me thinking though.

What would my friends do for me as an incredible act of kindness. I called 10 friends and relayed the story. Then I asked what they would do. Keep in mind the birds of a feather principle. My friends are pretty similar to me in many respects.

Here are the results of my official friendship poll. My friend's responses to this story.

Q : What would you do for me?

Call the Army and try and enlist me for Iraq. – 2
Send me a welcome home herd of Jehovah's Witnesses. – 1
Gift Certificate for the Dr. Phil Show. – 1
FREE 15 minute lap dance at The Seahorse Saloon (gay bar). – 1
Gift Certificate for FREE lunch at the Hope Rescue Mission. – 1
Take me for an all-expenses paid tour of the Potawattomi Zoo next week. – 1 (zoo opens in May)
Enroll me in rodeo clown school. – 1
Call in three bomb threats in my name. – 1
Offer me a warm beer. – 1

I get a lump in my throat just thinking about these guys. Ever receive an incredible act of kindness...or even better...extend one?

Sounds like a great bunch of friends you have. Wish mine were that cool. The news story though now that is something that most people could only hope for. I know the friends I have made on here Make me feel (like the soldier must have felt) on a daily basis.

Gem I'll tell you, these guys are a hell of a group. Chokes me up. Least I could do was register them all at the Columbia House FREE DVD web site.

A few years ago I was hospitalized for about a month with some injuries that were due to something that the authorities were seeing as being of a "highly suspicious nature". As far as any top DA wanting some easy reelection recognition for "protecting the public from this scourge of the land" this one would have been a particularly "slam dunk" case due to the evidence found at the scene. That does not necesarily mean I was guilty of all I could be charged with but it just means that most similar cases to this quite quickly and easily have the whole book thrown at them. It's just simply how they are dealt with across the board and they do tend to be a favorite with DA's looking out for their next re-election.

Since I was all morphined up most of my stay in the ICU I was lucky that the hospital staff had fully sheilded me from any intrusively questioning law enforcement officers. But after three weeks though my day came and I knew that odds were that I was soon to be on the fast track to my own personal "mother of all music facings".

I was utterly floored when the detective told me to not to worry and to simply open up and be honest about what happened. All my legal instincts told me not to and to take the 5th but he assured me that things were not what I feared and somehow there was a feeling of trust in what he said.

Long story short the good friend who had initially driven me to the hospital had stepped up to the plate and volunteered to him the mother of all character witness interviews and had, against all odds and with no extra legal assistance whatsoever, completely saved my ass. She was also looked at with quite some suspicion as well at the outset but in the long haul of the investigation they could not get anything to stick to her other than her helpful assistance to me.

This is a situation in which, commonly, anyone who gets suspiciously conneected to the alleged crime dumps everything they can on the guy who got caught and/or runs and hides not wanting to be seen as having any connection. But instead she gave the testimonial of her life and amazingly all charges whatsoever were fully dropped and I didn't even have to see the insides of a courtroom, do probation or get the first mark ever on my still unblemished sheet.

I still shudder and get teary eyed thinking of the prison time which I would still be serving had this case gone like similar ones usually do and if that one friend had not done what she did to help me.

Indebted to her beyond life.

My good friends would accept a collect call from jail and post my bail. My best friend would be in the cell next to me saying "Whoa girl, wasn't that fun!

During a particularly rough financial time, a group of friends bought me enough groceries to feed me and my son for about a month. I will never forget them for such an act of kindness.
