So maybe my life isn't so bad after all

As with everyone, I have my good days and bad days. Mostly good, interspersed with a few well-earned bad ones.

When I first moved here a year ago, I came1,000 miles from home with no kids, no friends and into a very stressful job. As I recall, back then most days were bad, filled with deadline stress, complete loneliness and a true sense of being lost. I missed my old comfortable life being Mom. But gradually, as the workload settled and my kids and friends came out a few times, and as I met and made a few friends the days grew better. The first six months, I would have jumped at the chance to go back - but now, I've actually had the chance, but made the decision to stay.

So today, I received an unexpected email from my sister, telling me about caring for her chronically ill husband, how his depression over his illnesses affects the entire family, how he will never get better, and her life will never be better. This from the most upbeat, caring, loving person I know. I didn't even know how to respond. I've been through the pain and anger of divorce, but never an illness-and never an incurable chronic illness. All I can do is tell her how much I love her, admire her, and offer a refuge if she ever cares to take it.

Then send her a joke ... for that is one of the key ways we have always dealt with stress. Be a smartass and make each other laugh.

So, though I imagine I'll still have my bad days when I seriously miss my kids and my friends, I also have the perspective that things could be worse. I'm making the best of my new life here with my new friends - the fact that I am indeed ok. I just keep it goofy (or at least smartass-silly).

Very touching. Lots of people have stories of heartache and distress, but few see the opportunity to change direction, cause someone to smile at just the right time. You can always tell the zealots and fanatics, they never smile or crack a joke!

You did a good deed. I hope it helps your sister if only for a moment.

Be well, and laugh everytime you get a chance!

Call me Mike.
