Queen Elizabeth I

HBO is running a two-part series on Elizabeth I.

I had no idea she was a domme - referring to the Earl of Essex, who had pissed her off: "My dogs wear my collars!" (would love to know if that is an actual quote)

What a complex woman, ruling a country in a male-dominated society, sacrificing her romantic life for the good of her subjects, settling for a series of intense relationships, with power to kill if displeased.

H-m-m-m-m. poor elizabeth

Her problems were compounded by the fact that Britain was penniless at the time but kept going to war anyway. Prates like Francis Drake wre encouraged to do their worst on the Spanish galleons and acted as a sort of de facto navy until the Spaniards got all pissed off and built the armada - but that's another story.

I don't know about "porr old Elizabeth". I think there were plenty of "poor old so-and-so" who went from favour to being decapitated almost on a whim.

It's quite possible that Elizabeth sacrificed a relationship for her subjects, but I suspect she mostly sacrificed because it gave her absolute power to do what she wanted / needed to do, and allowed her to have whatever relationships suited her at the time for as long as it suited her without having to remove people's heads like dear old Henry before her.

By the way these are just thoughts, not based on any scientific or historical study of the subject
