My Pink Ass #3: Anti-Semitism & Mel

My Pink Ass is a racism forum which encompasses discussion of all forms of bigotry.

Let's talk about Mel Gibson, everyone else is!

I expect everyone is aware of Mr. Gibson's deeply offensive remarks about Jews while under the influence of alcohol, so I won't rehash what happened.

His celebrity status magnifies the incident, there is no doubt about that. Ordinary people get offensively drunk all the time and there is no fallout.

Of interest is how Mr. Gibson's sincerity in apologizing has incrementally increased in relation to rising criticism from the Jewish community, media frenzy, and, oh, what's that word I'm looking for? ummm, career ostracism? something like that

ABC has cancelled collaboration with Mr. Gibson on
a holocaust mini-series. Barbara Walters "will never watch another Mel Gibson movie again." And so on.

Ouch! Hitting the pocketbook prompts an escalated apology.

Mr. Gibson appeals to Jewish community leaders to help him heal the wound, to "teach him." H-m-m-m-m, placing the onus on those he has offended?

The word "spin" comes to mind.

So, tell me, am I being too hard on Mel? Or not hard enough?

I won't be responding individually, I'll just let everyone's voices take over.

I missed the whole "incident" that you're speaking of so I cannot comment on exactly what was said, however... I rarely hold people accountable for what they say in a drunken stupor (the lord knows I've said some dumb things after a pitcher of Mai Tais). I'm a fan of Mr. Gibson and I can honestly say that I would give him the benefit of the doubt and I'll continue to see his movies.

have we all got drunk, have we all said things we have regreted while drunk, have we all had a drink and got behind the wheel of a car. a real man stands up and says sorry for what he has done, in the cold light of day its hard to admit that you were wrong. im not saying give the man an oscar, but he has stood up and will take the flack. personally i think its far worse that inocent people are dying in the middle east, are enegies should be directed in stopping the bombing and not directed in what a drunk says.

Be lucky!

I would give him the benefit of the doubt. I have a friend who had been personal massage therapist to Mel and his family when he is in Ca. Things I have been heard are very different from what is reported in the media. At least, he apologized and many celebrities don't do that much.

I too like the impartial view that you tried to achieve. First off, I am , on a personal level, appalled when someone judges a group all in one lump sum. I can not like someone because they themselves are a jerk.. but not because of skin,creed,sex..ect. But here it is... we live in America... he is, actually, allowed to think what he wants to think.. is it wrong he is a celebrity and thinks this way? maybe. But as JURGON stated, when we are drunk we are usually not smart with our words... so in the end he should not have said it... but is he the devil incarnate because he did? .... and you are allowed to think your way... how would you feel if people slammed you for it ( the you here is not you silk.. just your audience ) thanks for letting me get my two cents worth in J

Was the cancellation of the business project before or after this binge? I had heard it was canceled just before.

The Jewish Anti-defamation League of Greater Detroit was on the radio tonight as refusing to watch Gibson's movies for the past several years because of his making of The Passion some time ago. That's pretty bigoted as well.

Could these expletives be directed at that censorship?

All unknown to me. I just read.

Like Mz Kitka, I haven't heard what he said either. But supposedly it was offensive to Jews - so punishment must be meted out! Eye for an eye tooth for a tooth by Gawd! Let's see, what would be appropriate....Maybe he'll make a promo for the invasion of Lebonan. No, Network TV already is doing that. Maybe he'll make a movie and play Moses. Nawww Moses didn't die a gruesome death and Mel likes to die gruesomely. It's what he does best. Oh of course!!!! He should be pilloried and whipped. Then have his intestines taken out and crucified. It would satisfy the militant Jewery that we aren't anti-semetic AND Mel could die his violent death. Yup, I think that's the ticket.

There was this great episode of South Park last year or maybe the year before, which painted Mel as a complete whack job. Man, were they ever right on the money, huh?

Alcohol covers up your real feelings and allows you to say what you think.

It covers up embarassment and shame. Shame is the number one reason why people drink.

Mel put himself out there as a "holier than thou" disciple of Christ when in fact, he was a dry/wet drunk. I am in recovery (10 years) and I am also certified as a chemical dependency counselor. I know the slippery slope of relapse.

Some people use religion as a crutch in life. I have learned to look at the physical, social, emotional and spiritual elements of my life consistently to acquire a level of balance, harmony and happiness.

I have also learned that each day that goes by, we are the best that we can be. It does not mean that we cannot get better, but today, I am the best that I can be, today.

As a human being, I have to give myself permission to be human and to make mistakes. Then, I can give others permission to make mistakes.

By being judgmental and unforgiving, I condemn myself. That is what most religious people seem to do even though their readings tell them "judge not, or you will be judged".

I am not attempting to judge Mr. Gibson here, just point out the hypocracy involved with the religious right. Life could just be so much more fun without religous nuts. As a counselor, I found that peoples' feelings of inadequacy in living up to the church (and no one can) drove their feelings of shame (state of being/I am wrong)and hence, their addiction. Shame is the number one feeling that addicts are attempting to medicate.

All of us possess feelings deep inside that would be offensive to other races in some form or another. The issue is not racism in the case of Mel, it is in emotional and spiritual mangement; the feeling of shame. His intellectual feelings feelings collide with his spiritual ones. I see a lot of people saying they do not care here; that is legitimate. I see this as an perfect opportunity to open a dialogue on the honest deep feelings we all have inside.

It is our propensity to cover up or ignore intrinsic feelings that allows our social problems to proliferate.

For some reason I thought he was smarter than that. That's about all I have to say.

Being drunk certainly is no excuse for bigoted behavior. In this day and age you would like to think we`ve made progress against the sort of screwed up thinking that Gibson displayed. It`s really discouraging to hear this crap coming from some one who is supposed to at least have some minimal intelligence. Sure we have the nut cases who belong to white power groups or skin heads but until now I never thought of Mel Gibson as a nut case. I know you`ll find racism in every culture and nation on earth but I had hoped that we were getting past that in civilised society.

The media loves to play up this sort of thing...I wonder somewhere even in your country where a husband has brutally abused or far worse killed his entire family and that rarely gets covered. I am not excusing Mel's deplorable behaviour but at least they need to put it in it's right context.
There are far worse inhumanity to man going on at this very second than how stupid Mel's behaviour was.
Are we innocent of any racism? I can't say for myself I am! No matter how conscious we are of being a person of integrity we must always be aware of our actions that what we do does not offend someone of another culture. I am always on constant maintenance. I only hope that the reciever of my stupid act or words will forgive me if I genuinely feel sick to heart for offending them.
We may not fully understand every race and culture but are we quick then to apologize or forgive when necessary. I am sorry for my ignorance at times I don't even realize I have hurt someone.
Great post SD....It is by discussing such things we begin to heal what is deep rooted within us and all the lack of knowledge we have all been carrying around.

Hey silkditty I still haven't heard what he said though I guess it's not important since he's not denying what he said. Apparently, most Jewish groups aren't too upset since it was just one man's personal statements made in private but they're hoping he does some soul-searching to find out what his issues are. I don't think his apologies have anything to do with box office or earning potential - he's the richest actor in Hollywood by far.
