Getting nervous

I have to take a pre-BCT (basic combat training) assessment this Thursday to make sure that we can pass the first diagnostic for basic training before we ship and the one area that I'm struggling in is running. I exceed the minimum needed for push-ups and sit-ups needed for the pre-BCT test....but the run....it's driving me nuts.

shortsweet, don't let it stress you out. When I joined, I was in the same boat. I was good on push ups and sits ups, but ran like a beached whale. You'll get whipped into shape in basic the same as I did. When I started basic training, it took me 18 minutes and 50 seconds to run 2 miles. 13 weeks later, I ran it in 12:30.

You will do fine as long as you do not quit. Remember that basic training is a joke. It is like highschool or college. They will tell you it is really important, and they'll tell you that they are preparing you, and sometimes it will seem really hard and you'll wonder why in the hell you ever decided to put yourself through it, but in the end it won't seem so bad, and when you get to your unit, you'll see that the learning is just beginning. Basic training is just that: basic. It's all a game, and all you have to do to win is dowhat you're told, get into shape, and put up with the fools in basic for a few weeks.

And if you ever find yourself wondering if they are making you do things the hard way on purpose, for the sole reason of makingit harder on you, they are. The secret to being tough and hard is to do progressively harder and nastier things. I once did a 20 mile tactical road march with a 70 pound pack, no water resupply, ans stress frasctures in both heels. After I did that, all other road marches that came after were a walk in the park. Another time I had to sleep in a gravel parking lot in the pouring rain, with my cap over my face to keep the water out of my nose. After that, hard wood floors felt like water beds.

Now don't worry, I didn't have to do that crazy stuff in basic! that stuff came after I got into the Rangers. But the same concept applies regardless of what MOS or Unit you are in.

Good luck!

Remember that Guy you once knew who lusted after you but grossed you out so much you couldn't stand Him living in the same town as you? Make Him think you're finally interested in Him and... you'll run alright.
