Cruelty/Evolution

Ok, human cruelty is on my mind right now. What is it in a person that causes them to make choices they know will hurt others? I saw something on Oprah that got me thinking about this, a couple who had taken in six foster children just to lock them in a tiny bedroom every afternoon and feed them from one dog bowl. They also let their saddistic older son "play" with these children. This went on for years! How can the human mind sink to such depths? Is this glitch there in every mind (even my own), the capability to turn off compassion and enjoy cruelty? Or is this a result of evolutionary discrepencies? I find it hard to believe I have this capacity within me, so could it be that some of us have evolved beyond it and others are left with it?

Its a terriable world out there when you take the time to look at it. Who's to say why things like that happen. I don't think its any kind of evolution, but a glitch or defect in someone's brain that shuts down the ability to feel compassion. There are so many stories like that, and there is such a sickness involved. You could debate that these people need help and medical treatment, I would debate that these people need to removed from the face of the earth, that they are not worth the time, the effort or the money to fix. Its the victims of these situations that need the fixing and help and all the compasion in the world to help them through the obvious mental scarring that they will carry the rest of there lives.

An often-overlooked and unmentioned fact about foster-child abuse is that many foster parents receive money from the state to supposedly help them care for the children. People who are guilty of the type of abuse you mention are very often using the children purely as a means of income.

Does this make the abuse better or worse, or more palatable? NO. It does give us a sense of HOW people can be capable of such behavior.

Greed is a nasty, nasty bitch. And once she gets her hooks in some people, they lose all ability to reason and act responsibly.

I'll never forget the time (this was several years ago) when I pulled into a parking place at the grocery store at exactly the same time as a couple in a brand new Cadillac with gold-plated wire wheels and a velour roof.

They took the parking space directly in front of mine, and they both exited the car in unison, just before I shut my truck off.

They were a good looking couple. Both wearing Fila Track Suits and brand new Nike's. The amount of gold jewelry they were wearing could have fed a small country for a year.

I went into the store and did my shopping. When I finally made it back to the checkout counter, I was directly behind them in line.

They paid for their purchases with FOOD STAMPS!

It makes me nauseous to think about it even now.

I really don't think you would be capable of this kind of cruelty. It bothers you just to disappoint others much less actually hurt someone for pleasure.

Trying to figure out behaviors like this serves no purpose. To understand it would require you to think like them and you are not capable of such sickness.

While it is not an explanation into the evil that lurks in the minds of these sick people. A few thoughts..
History shows that any and every type of sickness and perversion that is going on today, has been going on for centuries. And it will continue as such, and there are no amount of laws that can stop it.
These types of people in the past still comitted their dastardly deeds even when they knew the punishment for their crimes was impalement, hanging, crucifixion, flailing, caning, and so on.
The only reason we as a nation are more aware of the infinite depths of perversion that people will go into is because of the increased media attention into every aspect of our society.
Before television, radio, automobiles, and indoor plumbing. The average person did not travel more than 20 miles from their home, the only deviants of society that they knew of were within those confines.
Again, all of this has been happening for centuries, and it will not stop, ever.
However, I do believe that these people should be put to death immediately upon their conviction in court. They have no place in our society and they should not be allowed to live the rest of their lives sucking up mine and your tax dollars on appeals, lawyers, and the increasing cost of imprisioning these perverts. I am not interested in why they did it, what drives them, or some sicko psychiatrist wanting to get into their head. They did it, the proof is there, kill 'em and let the devil have his fun with them in hell.

shawn it isnt surprising, my job has to do with these types of issues and the little surprises me. Our laws and system are part of the problem. When people get divorced children are treated as part of a property settlement. Not humans. It's disgusting.

The cure for real sadism could be real equality ,or something approximating it. Unfortunately, real equality in the USA has never been much more than a sham. Think about it.
