Public Speaking

Despite having worked as a teacher, public speaking is something I do not enjoy, nor is it something at which I believe I excel. Yet, it seems many writers end up in situations where speaking to the public is required, as happened to me today at a meeting of aspiring romance writers.

When I set out to write, the thought of having to explain my writing was never a consideration. I'd always believed the written word would speak for itself. Oftentimes, people crave more than that, a personal connection with the author that isn't found in pages. If anything positive comes from today's experience, it is that I am a better speaker today than I was the last time I spoke. I believe I held the audience's attention better than past outings, and actually sold a few books as a result.

Thank for the kind words. I'll be happy to describe published titles in a later post.

As for the term "aspiring writer," I've often held it as a misnomer. If you write, you're a writer. No two ways about it.
