Ramblings

So yesterday my son calls from school and asks if I will go to the school office and pick up his cell phone which had be confiscated. Kids are allowed to have them on their person, in a purse, pocket or backpack, but they must be turned off while inside the building. I told him that I would sometime later in the day.

The assistant principal who took the phone is a cool lady. She proceeds to tell me that my son was dribbling chocolate milk all down his front, face, neck, chest. It was creating a scene in the cafeteria. One of his friends had the phone and was taking pictures of the event. Her comment was that this is high school, not elementary school, to which I wholeheartedly agreed.

Then she asked how I knew to come and get the phone. I told her that he had called me concerning the matter. To which she remarked that he must have used someone elses cell phone, which is expressly prohibited during school hours. She had been willing to forget the picture incident, but the calling had to be addressed with detention. Well, he managed to go five moths without any trouble and here we go again. I just can't get the concept of poor judgement across to him. My older two were never in trouble for anything!!! He is turning me into a crazed parent!!! But, by the same token, I shake my head, smile, and laugh....he is made from the same mold as his mom.

I took a walk yesterday afternoon...it was a bit cool, but sunny and clear. I imagined warmer weather and found my hand in my pants. Just couldn't resist. It was a much more abbreviated session than I would have liked, but sometimes you just have to go with the flow and enjoy what is available.

The birds are back almost in full force. Betcha didn't know that I'm a birdwatcher. I have a feeder right off my deck railing. Right now it is mostly rusty capped sparrows, finches of various colors, and their relatives. The pic was taken through the glass, so it is not as clear as I like..but I'll get some good ones eventually. There are a few titmice that frequent the feeder, but they never stay long enough to ge a good shot. They swoop, peck and fly away!! Have a great day(or evening) .

I've one problem with the school incident. It implies that there is no public phone in the school. Regardless of the rules regarding mobiles in the school, if there is no public phone that affords the caller some privacy, it is irresponsible and indefensible.

To ban mobile use AND not have a public phone is just dumb, and as a parent I would insist on the school putting in a pay phone.

They have a public phone which is turned off during school hours so the inmates, no, I mean students cannot use it during school hours. It is there for after school use

Well, that's wrong and inexcusable. A child should always be able to contact a parent privately.
