My Loss

I was reflecting back on the people I had met at one time or another in my lifetime, and I just thought about my uncle who passed away 2 years ago. He was a very special person. We used to travel all the way down in the deep South to visit him every year, all the way from Iowa. I was about 8 years old then. I can remember that they lived out of town, on an old winding dirt road. It seemed like we drove on that road for nearly an hour back then, around each curve hoping to catch a glimpse of his house. He sold meat then...you know, more or less a salesman for one of the large meat packing companies. Then he bought a Dairy Queen one year. That was the greatest back then...all the ice cream one could eat. Years later he bought my Grandfathers mom and pop motel, with the resturant and bar. And one great fishing pond out back. He sold it a few years later and moved around the area I live in now...just 2 houses down from my folks. Those were great times for all of them. I think he lived there for almost 20 years. He passed away in his sleep 2 years ago last Christmas. I was there, one of the first to find him laying there in his pajamas, all streched out, his eyes closed, looking like he was at peace with the world. He was at peace...but in a different and more pleasent place than he had known before. Goodbye Uncle Keith...I will miss you.
