Where the Girls Go

Wandering through the blogs today I came across one about beards, and hoping the facial hair makes you look old enough to buy beer. And after reading Goddess a few days ago about her time at the Whiskey, I flashed back. Those kind of stories remind me of all the things we did as teenagers to get beer and sneak into bars.

My home is in the lakes/resort area of Minnesota, and we have a wonderful old hotel here that was the hot spot of the Summer many years ago. At one time it was on the National Register of Historic Places. But now due to age and a fire it is a hulking mass of dilapidated, Tudor days gone by. The current owner would like to rebuild and create a wonderful Arts and Craft style hotel.

But in the day this was the place to be. Locals, summer people, and weekenders all came to the old hotel to drink, dance, and party. Just being teenagers we were terrified to try our id's on a place so well populated by people we knew. Getting caught would have meant the end of a very good summer. No guts, no glory and in we went.

Inside was like a different world that we as seasoned bar-goers take for granted. Beer, bands, and older women, and they are willing to talk to you, just assuming you are old enough to be here. Made so many female friends because I would see them once or twice a week at the old hotel bar. Whether it was reality or just in my mind, I felt an elevated sense of social status.

After a couple times sneaking the bouncers got to know our faces and we were waved inside the door. Saw a lot of great regional bands there. Have seen some of the old bands since, and it just wasn't the same. My favorite at that time I saw later and they were a great disappointment. Father time is cruel, even to rock and rollers.

My favorite live band was in Winter Park, CO many years ago. Wonder what they are up to today. Oh well, will have to save that story for another day.
