Loons Come Home, and Not Just the Birds

With unseasonably warm weather, Spring has come to Minnesota. The photo attached to the post is the first sunset over the open lake since December. I was able to slide some dock in the water, so for me the season has officially begun.

The rebirth of Spring always brings back the memories of all the great Summers I have spent on this lake. And the anticipation of more memory making days ahead.

Nights laying on the dock, with friends, family, and girlfriends, watching the stars. As amateur astronomers we would try and pick out the constellations, and watch for the satellites to fly by. Every now and then a shooting star would fire, and you were the envy if you saw it and nobody else did.

And of course the ultimate: the Northern Lights. Standing orders for all visitors and guests is to wake me up if they see the Aurora Borealis. Some nights they are just white, and maybe a little pink slowly moving and dancing across the sky. And at the peak, they are cosmic fireworks. I have watched a show that filled the entire sky and included every color of the rainbow. It is a night which can't be described, and I will never forget those lights.

When the loons call, as they have been for the last few days, it reminds me of floating late at night with my first love. She described the call as "melancholy." It is the perfect word for that wailing call we hear so often. And now when I hear that call, I think of her, and those nights.

Spring is here, life begins again, a sunset cruise with a bottle of wine is just hours away.

Spring is my favorite time of the year...the buds are on the trees now and everything is beginning to warm. No loons in my neighborhood, unfortunately...seems to be alot of looney tunes these days though...the joys of the writer within seem to calm that sense of recognition, however. Happy Spring, Putt!

Just a little food for thought.............
If you really want to be happy, nobody can stop you...

Our loons come in all shapes and sizes, many of the two-legged kind who sit on four-legged barstools. And while I never get tired of a loon call, our year-round loons can test your patience with their calls. As always, thanks for reading and responding.
