DRIVE

The first time I ever got behind the wheel of a car I was barely 13 years old.My mama done had her this here boyfriend...he had a big ole pig farm..up in Indiana.Early in the mornings..he'd get in his big shiny white Bonneville convertable and ride about a half mile up this gravel road from the main house and feed the hogs..sometimes he'd let me help.

Sooo one morning..after we got done with the chores..he asks me..Do I wanna drive back to the house? Me?..He's gonna let me drive that big white car?..I don't know how..I say..I ain't never tried.I'll teach ya..it's easy..he tells me..smiling.

Sooo there we was..on that beautiful day..in that fancy topless car..A young girl..two lil hands on the wheel.I can still remember the way I felt that day.I sat up as straight and tall as I could in the seat..stretched my feet way far..they barely reached the pedals..tiptoes touching. He says..just ease on the gas now hun..kinda slow..it will be just fine. And it was..we moved down that gravel road..the wind stirred my hair..and then all of a sudden..I was driving.I will..never,ever..forget that day.

The next time ..I was about fifteen. My eighteen year old boyfriend..soon to be my husband..had a 57 Chevy..dark green..a 4 speed in the floor. We was turning down my road when he asks if I'd like to try and drive his precious car. No way!..I scream.Sure he says..pulling slowly over.He shows me how I have to use the clutch and explains what the "H" pattern means on the big black knob of the shifter that he put in himself.I start easing out..the car shimmies a lil..not bad he says..speed up a lil..I do.Push in the clutch and shift again..he says..with a lil scraping and jerking..I get er done.More speed..he says..now shift..I do..about then..the car starts this horrible shake all over..it shakes sooo hard..the durn knobs to the radio shake off the dash and fall in the floor.I panic and hit the brakes.Later..he tells me..I put the car in reverse instead of the gear it should have went into..how..he don't know..it ripped three teeth off the flywheel though.I won't be driving no more of his cars..he tells me.

True to his word..after we was married..I was never allowed to drive.By the age of twenty six..I still didn't have a drivers license..or a phone.I lived way out in the boonies.Just me ,my babies and my man..that's all I knew.

Then..I made a friend..she started teaching me how to drive..a lil at a time.Sooo..one day..his Camero wouldn't start. My old man tells me to have my friend to take me to get a battery for it.I had his car for the whole day..I was gonna try for my license.

But..when I got there..we was having a downpour..a real hard summer rain. The state trooper said..sorry hun..but we just don't give the test in weather like this.Well..ya all know me..MZEmotional..I just started bawling. What's wrong lady?I tell him it's my only chance..my one and only..if I don't try today I will never get to drive..my husband forbids it.OOOhh really?..he says. Then he tells me if I can drive around the course in this weather..and not hit anybody or anything..he will pass me.I'm so frigging happy and excited..I throw my arms right around him and kiss him..right in that room..guess what?I passed.

Kinda taught myself in a Ford Fairlane that we had when I was growing up.

I was 16 when I got my DL

The first car I drove was the one above, the first one that was mine was a 1972 Plymouth Duster. What a crappy car!

No I've never really had a wreck, wreck. Backed into a lady that wasn't parked in a pakring spot, she was parked illegally.

Who taught ya all to drive?? Partially, my Dad . . . Partially, the driver's ed instructor at school.

How old was ya when ya got your legal license? I got my permit at 15 1/2 . . . the earliest possible in our state IF you completed driver's ed in school. However, I grew up on a farm. I'd been driving tractors, trucks and other farm vehicles since I was strong enough to push in a clutch (about age 10).

What was the first car ya ever drove? My Dad's Mercury Comet was the car I used for the driving test. My first personal vehicle was a 1961 International Scout 4 X 4 . . . A really neat set of wheels for a teen-aged kid who literally drove it up the side of cliffs. (Had a winch built into the front bumper) :B

Ever tore a car up..that wasn't yours?? No, but I tore up a couple of my own as a kid. The most memorable was a '63 Chevy Impala . . . (Sure wish I had that one back.)

. . . another neat trip down memory lane Mz . . . Thanks!

Doc

my dad taught me to drive, tho i think he regretted it pretty soon - because when we were practicing parking, i got too close to the curb and didn't understand what that loud noise was - well, seems i tore off the hubcap and my dad, bless him, just started laughing - but he never let me drive his car again
then, my high school sweetheart taught me to drive a stick shift - 57 chevy, 3-speed on the column . . . grinding noise, panic on his face, and then i was banned from driving his car, too!
nice memories your post brought back to me, mzhuny
thanks!

First off thanks for dropping by my blog.
I passed my test when I was 20 and the first car I drop was a yellow Ford Fiesta, which was a piece of crap.
Passed my test first time though.

Well my answers almost mimick NightLady1000...my dad taught me to drive, I was 17 when I got my license and my first car was a brown 1975 Ford Pinto, and never tore up a car, at least not that I remember anyway but then again, I cannot remember what I did yesterday let alone 30 some years ago. i was 22 when i got my license. my mother taught me to drive in big city rush hour traffic; i also had a driving teacher. before every test, i would go for a lesson and do the whole routine perfectly, then i'd go for the test and get really really nervous and mess up. on the fifth time i went for my license, i was so stressed i was hyperventilating -- the testing guy tried to calm me down, but it just got worse, and i bumped into a pole. on the 6th time, the same tester from the 5th time took me, and from the outset it was clear he wanted to pass me ... he talked soothingly the whole time, and even tho i made one little mistake out on the road test, he passed me.

god, whenever i think of it, the stress of it all just comes back to me all over again, even tho i am a good driver and the only accident i've ever been in is when this guy skipped a stop street and crashed into the side of me!

Who taught ya all to drive??
My Dad taught me.

How old was ya when ya got your legal license?
16

What was the first car ya ever drove?
1956 Chevy. I was 12 and I was VERY short, could hardly see through the steering wheel. My Dad had just replaced the brakes on the car and he wanted to see if he had things adjusted so they didn't pull to one side or the other. He took me out to a deserted dirt road, showed me how to work the clutch and asked me to start off down the road while he watched from behind the car. When he yelled I was to put in the clutch and stomp on the brake. I was nervous as hell but I did as I was told. I don't remember if the brakes pulled the car to one side or the other, I was too nervous to notice.

Ever tore a car up..that wasn't yours??

Yep, dinged up a car of my Dad's when I was just 16. I was driving on a side street real slow. My right arm was around a lovely young lady and my left hand was on the steering wheel. I somehow lost my concentration and a telephone pole jumped right out in front of me and crunched the right front fender. The damage wasn't significant but my Dad was not very happy about it.

I have been driving (with a license)42 years without a single reportable accident (my first encounter with the telephone pole was an "incident" not an accident.) Four weeks ago yesterday I had my first true accident. This time the damage was far more severe, the car was totaled but I wasn't hurt. It was a "company" car and they gave me a temporary replacement the very same day and now I am waiting on a brand new permanent replacement.

By the way... seat belts do work... I was doing more than 60 mph when my car hydroplaned on standing water, spun out of control across 4 lanes of one of the busiest interstate highways in Virginia and slammed into the guard rail. I was very fortunate to have not been injured, stuff was thrown all over the inside of the car but the only thing that happened to me was that I hit the back of my head on the door post.

What a wonderful and endearing story MzHuny! GOOD FOR YOU!
My mom lived her whole life without ever driving or knowing how to drive a car. Heck, she never even learned how to ride a bicycle!

My dad taught me how to drive along with taking drivers ed in school. I got my license when I was 16 and I was the first kid in my class to have a license and a car. Needless to say, I gained in popularity real fast, LOL.

I dont know what I would do if I didn't drive.

I got my license during university time, and I learned driving by engaging a driving instructor.

Guess what.... although I got my license, I never get to drive as long as my father or my brothers are around. Now that I'm married, I don't drive if my hubby is around. Although I love driving, I always console myself that it's not bad having a chaffeur (father, brothers or hubby) to drive me around.

My dad taught me how to drive. When I was eight years old, he would sit me in his lap and let me steer his 1951 Chevy. He would work the brakes, gas because legs would not reach the floor.

I was 17 when I got my license. Had to take the test three times. The first time, some SOB rear-ended me at a stop sign. The second time, I rubbed the curb during my parking tests. Dad had just bought a new 1966 Chevy Impala station wagon. This was the first time I had ever driven it and the first time I had ever driven a car with power steering and brakes. His old car, a 1960 Chevy, was going to be mine but the carb caught on fire the night before my drivers test. The sidewalk had a jagged edge and the tire went flat. The third time I finally passed.

The first car I ever drove was a 1949 Chevy pickup truck that belonged to my uncle. I would drive around the pasture and practice parallel parking between fence posts.

I wrecked my brothers car, a 1969 Camaro. I left the Bluegrass and headed down Greenup Avenue. It was raining, he had bald tires, and I was driving a bit too fast. I hydroplaned and wiped out the sides of five parked cars as well as totaling my brothers car. I was not hurt at all, until my brother beat the crap out of me. This was the only 'at fault' accident I ever had. Over the years, I have had four or five 'fender benders' but nothing serious. My last accident was over 20 years ago.

Now I can dream about the movie I'd like to make, "Driving MZ Huny"!!!

I like those shades on you MzHuny!

My stepsister let me drive her old white Ford ( I think it was a 1955) when I was 15 years old. Nobody really taught me, I just knew how from watching people. I drove with no license until I was 20 years old. ( any cops in the room ...too bad, that was a long time ago
The worst thing that happen to me was, I learned to drive on an automatic car and never had a chance to drive one that was a straight drive. Years ago my husband bought a straight drive truck and tried to teach me, but I just didn't get the hang of it and I still can only drive an automatic.

I have been very lucky, I never damaged a vehicle or had a wreck, that is a miracle since I have been driving since age 15.

BTW! My BULLSHIT ALERT went off while reading your story. Not on you, MzHuny! On your first hubby.

If a car's transmission will let you shift into reverse while it's moving forward, it's a poorly designed transmission! Besides, if my math is right, that 57 Chev was 8 years old at the time. Maybe he or whoever had the car before him had shifted it into reverse a few times before, too! Let's factor in thousands of miles of wear and tear on that transmission as well!

I have to confess, us guys are such pussies about our cars! If anyone else does something wrong to it one time, and then later when we have to do some repair to it, we'll actually blame that person for it! Rather than just owning up to the fact that cars hafta have maintenance for normal wear and tear! Yep. We're sick like that.

MzHunyHole, by the powers vested in me and my bullshit detector by the Great Imaginary State of Blogland, I do hereby declare you innocent and absolved of any wrongdoing against said 1957 Chevrolet. Any damages that occurred to it on that day were purely accidental or part of a male conspiracy of blamestorming!

That is a great story, Lyndah. You made me smile while remembering my own driving escapades. I grew up in the country and my dad let all of us kids have a turn sitting in the steering wheel from the time we were toddlers. He finally let me sit in the seat and try it on my own when I was 9. We were about a mile from the house. I damn near ran us off the road and gave us whiplash from all the jerky starting and stopping.
I took driver's ed in school at 15, did my probationary time and got my license on my 16th birthday. My parents had an old panel station wagon, I wanna say it was a Mercury, but I'm not sure. I drove the hell out of that car. I could comfortably fit in 7 friends and squeeze in 5 more, if the need was there. And it often was...just to go cruising up and down the main street. The use of seat belts sure wasn't being preached back then.
When I was a senior, my mom had a Bonneville. The front end was almost as big as the entire rest of the car. If you went up a little incline, all you could see was the hood. I used to love to take that car two tracking. (For those of you who weren't brought up in a rural area, that's driving through one lane dirt or grass roads out in the middle of nowhere.) Me and my sis and two brothers we were hanging with used to go to the School Forest and park, meaning we were sucking face. The roads back there were treacherous, full of tree roots coming up through the ground and bumps and dips. I used to take those trails at 50-60 miles an hour....until I put the springs through the trunk. No more car use for Debbie and I had to fork over the money from my part time job for over 3 months to help pay for its repair.
Have a wonderful weekend, MZ Huny. Gonna see your man? Mine will be here this weekend!

Who taught ya all to drive??

A boyfriend; He was 17 & I was 14. He had a red 62' Rambler American convertible with a shift on the steering column. He let me practice on what we used to call Roller Coaster road which was a long old dirt road with rolling hillocks and turn offs here and there to good neckin' spots up in the foothills.

How old was ya when ya got your legal license?
16.

What was the first car ya ever drove?

My mom's Buick - the one I put thru the garage on my brother J's 5th birthday.

Ever tore a car up..that wasn't yours??

Nope. I liked driving so much, that there was no way that I was gonna do something dumb to screw it up.

My boyfriend (later to be my husband and now ex husband) taught me to drive when I was 15 in his '75 GMC Jimmy in the middle of winter, mostly on logging roads with plenty of snow. I think that was because of the extra cushioning the snow provided if I hit anything! Got my license first time out when I was 16.
Only accident I've ever been in was when I was hit by a drunk driver that blew down a hill and threw a stop sign going about 80. Knock on wood that will be the only one I'm ever in!

Man oh man does this blog bring back some memories. Well here are the answers to your questions.

1: My uncle

2: 16

3: A 1967 chevy pickup with a corvette 327 engine that had been beefed up a bit. I was told to put the truck in drive... which I did.... and then my uncle said to smash the gas pedal all the way to the floor. Man that truck lit up those tires and swung right around the other direction. Been hooked on speed and fast cars ever since.

4: Yep....... when I was 17 I took my grandfathers 4x4 out with some friends and we decided to go off road. Man I got in so much trouble because we got the truck stuck and none of us had money for a tow truck and we had to call home and have my grandfather come pull us out with the tractor.

Got my license at 16 and just dodged that silly thing where you have a permit until like 17 1/2.

Probably first drove a Ford Taurus, I can't recall. My dad did most of the teaching. The first stick-shift I learned to drive was a junky little jeep down in Aruba. But I forgot by the time I had to learn to drive the Honda I got a year later and had to relearn, much to my dad's chagrin and his neck's disapproval.

I did get into an accident with a car that wasn't mine once, but other than that so far I've managed to avoid incident in a vehicle not my own.

Who taught ya all to drive??
That'd be my daddy and friend in the country. About the worst I could've done was put the truck in the ditch or take out someone's mailbox.

How old was ya when ya got your legal license?
I'm thinking I was 17 before I was brave enough to try. It was just easier to give someone else gas money.

What was the first car ya ever drove?
1967 Stingray...white with rainbow striping and T-tops, white mahogany leather seats and a stereo from hell. I loved it! But, never got it over 35 mph (ok, I was scared I'd hurt it!)

Ever tore a car up..that wasn't yours??
Yep, backing up in someone's driveway, I took out the exhaust over a sewer top. I got it fixed, but never backed uphill again.

_____My parents taught me how to drive, but they were way to critical and started saying no when i asked, so I gave up and bought a moped, then a Honda 175 motorcycle. I took the written chauffeurs license test when I was twenty one and the stupid state gave me a regular drivers license WITH a motorcycle AND chauffeurs endorsement WITHOUT me EVER taking the driving test. It was a mistake that I didn't inform them of.

Who taught ya all to drive?? Basic driving in driver ed. Stick shift by one of my mother's colleagues at the college she taught at.

How old was ya when ya got your legal license? 16.25

What was the first car ya ever drove? 1973 Ford LTD on driving range at driver ed.

Ever tore a car up..that wasn't yours?? Not a car, but a pickup truck that made half a left turn and stopped squarely across my lane on a 2-lane road with no shoulders. I was screwed anyway, and it was his fault, and he was the softest thing to hit. I was glad I had my little pickup, though, because my car would probably have taken a nose diver under that big pickup and that might've been the end of me right then and there, 13 years ago.

I was taught at a driving school in South Florida. My teacher was 34 years old and her name was Maria Luisa. Not only did she teach me how to drive, but she also gave some sexual tips, some I still use now-a-days.

I was 16 years old.

1961 Impala. One time I fit 14 high school friends in my car to go to the beach.

Never wrecked a car that wasn't mine.

Truly learned how to when I was 19. My two female best friends in college. One had a impala built like a tank and the other had an oldsmobile cutlass. I finally got my license at the age of 20. My first car was a pontiac lemans. Have good memories of that car. And as of yet have not tore up a car. Unless you count a rental that someone sideswiped me.

Who taught ya all to drive??

A Londoner called Eddie, a friend called Nigel and my father in law.

How old was ya when ya got your legal license?

Quite late. I was 28.

What was the first car ya ever drove?

A Hillman Hunter bought off my father in law. The first vehicle I ever took control of was a Fokker F27 Friendship airliner (complete with passengers) when I was 13. Yup, they did crazy things like that when I was a kid. Then I drove a 52 ton Centurion tank in Berlin, when I was 15.

Ever tore a car up..that wasn't yours??

Nope. But I almost ran over an army officer with the tank!

warm xx

Who taught ya all to drive??
My older brother...he was 17 - I was 15...we spent one summer putting roofs on houses in Cleveland...he slit his left pointer finger down the middle with a razor knife...blood everywhere...we had to replace some of the new shingles...anyway...we had a 1957 Chevy Appache panel van...3 speed shift out of the floor...brother couldn't drive...he was too busy squeezing our shirts around his hand...me...no license...never drove a stickshift...drove through the hood, took the freeway (merging was hell)...made it to the hospital...mom and dad showed up...wouldn't let me drive home.

How old was ya when ya got your legal license?
Learner permit at 16 years, 3 1/2 hours...mom took us all to the BMV on our 16th...great birthday present...passed the exam 1 week later...dad would take us to downtown Cleveland to practice parallel parking...no pressure there.

What was the first car ya ever drove?
Mom's 1954 Plymouth Fury Station wagon...me - about ten years old...car parked in the driveway...keys in the ignition (keys were always in the car in those days)...me and younger brother started playing around...started it up to listen to the radio...bumped the car into gear...rolled down the driveway...over the curb...through the backyard...into mom's vegetable garden...Dad wouldn't even let us ride our bike's for long time after that one.

Ever tore a car up..that wasn't yours??
Oldest brother's 1959 Plymouth Fury sedan...Two tone exterior...deluxe interiopr...PUSH BUTTON transmission..."cherry" car...he was away at college (couldn't bring cars along back then)...borrowed his car after school to run some errands...came out of the store...car was gone (should have learned about leaving keys in the ignition)...anyway...police found the car three hours later wrapped around a telephone pole...dad worked for an insurance agency - his best friend had a body shop...spent the next six weeks rebuilding a 1962 T-Bird...back and forth from home ...on a bike...brother liked his new car, but was still pissed

Who taught ya all to drive?? My mom taught me to drive in our car. I wasn't allowed behind the wheel until I had taken driver's ed, which was the semester after I turned 16. I'm glad it was her, because I don't think my dad would have had enough patience to teach me!

How old was ya when ya got your legal license? I failed my driver's test the first time, because I had difficulty parallel parking, but a couple of months later, I had a license in hand. It was about 2 months before my 17th birthday.

What was the first car ya ever drove? I believe it was an Aspen, but I drove the family van all the time too.

Ever tore a car up..that wasn't yours?? I once hit my sister's car that was parked right next to the drive way. I was in my parent's van at the time. Not a whole of damage, but my dad was furious!

WHAT a great story!!! I was 17-years-old when I got my legal license ... 8/17/1980. Yes I have smashed-up someone's car that wasn't my own ... I hit the monkey bars at our conglomerated school with a friend's pick-up, trying to park it. And I didn't have my license at the time. *oh buoy* Thank goodness for small town "justice" and fixing things with a handshake. Learned my lesson well! / {=}
