Cut-and-pasteable "Can't Get Into Chat" Guide

Cut-and-Pasteable "Can't Get Into Chat Guide" for your Members

This guide is here to assist moderators who wish to help their members get into chat rooms. It's a post that you can put on your group.

There are six easy steps to using this guide:

1) Establish a topic. Members can reply to this topic, in order to satisfy your posting requirements. For an example, you might wish to see Post ANYTHING here (including gibberish), to get on the active members list. Note that this helps "corral" the garbage posts that people often make, just so they're no longer considered "associate members."

2) Cut below the line below (in red) and paste into a Notepad window. Do not use MS-WORD or another word processor - you need "plain text" format.

3) Replace __GROUP_NAME__ with your group name.

4) Replace __GROUP_NO__ with your group number. (If you do not know what your group number is, view your group home page, and then scroll down to the bottom, on the left.)

5) Replace __GIBBERISH_POST___ with the post number of the post that you established in step 1. (To find the number of the post, view the post, and then scroll down to the bottom.)

6) Then, simply post the results in your group, under a helpful topic, such as How to Get Into Chat. You may also wish to put a link to this post, in your group introduction.

Please do not post comments here, in this blog, as they will not be answered. (You also can't send mail though the site to this profile.)

All comments should be directed to: Chat room access - towards a definitive tips list (You'll also find an example of the guide there, with everything filled in.)

CUT BELOW THIS LINE TO THE END

There are a lot of possible reasons why you can't get into the chat room. Please be patient ...
0) Before you begin ...

Every interest group on this site has a Group Home Page. To see the group home page for __GROUP_NAME__, click on: [group __GROUP_NO__], or use your browser's back button.

Next, see if you can find the Menu bar. It runs across the top of your page, and will have links on it such as Home, a mailbox icon, My Account, Browse etc.

Finally note that the site has its own home page. To get there, simply click on Home on the left of your menu bar.

It's absolutely crucial that you understand the difference between the Group Home Page and the site home page, and know how to find the Menu bar.

If you aren't sure what these things are, please spend a second or two - to make sure you understand.
1) Is your profile approved?

Go to the site's home page (first link on the left, on the the menu bar), and then view your profile. If your profile is not approved, then you will not be able to visit any chat room on this site.
2) Have you joined this group?

Go to the group home page, and see if you notice a big button that says Join this group. You can't get into a group's chat room until you join. (If you have already joined the group, the button will instead say Leave this group.)
3) Do you see a link to get into the chat room?

Go to the group home page, and see if you notice a link to get into the chat room. This will appear on the left, below the button that says Leave this group.

If you don't see the link to get into the chat room, then do these four steps: (a) click on Groups on the menu bar (at the top); (b) look for Most Active Group Chat Rooms on the right; (c) Click on View All next to Most Active Group Chat Rooms, and find __GROUP_NAME__ in the list; (d) Click on __GROUP_NAME__ (do not click on the link that says "visit/join group" ).
4) Are you an "associate member?"

Go to the group home page, and look for the yellow box on the left. Does it say that you are an associate member?

If you are an associate member, first, reply to this topic: [group_post __GIBBERISH_POST__]

(To reply to a topic, you must scroll down to the bottom of the page, and use the box at the bottom.)

It may take up to 24 hours for the system to change you into an "active" member. (I regret to say that it may never change you into an "active" member, because this aspect of the site is buggy.)

It might be faster for you to get a new profile. See step 7 below for more information.
5) Is your profile turned off?

If your profile is turned off, you may not be able to get into the chat room. This is because the site doesn't consider you to be an "active" member.

Go to the site home page and view your profile. You may change your profile settings there.

It may take up to 24 hours for the system to change you into an "active" member. (I regret to say that it may never change you into an "active" member, because this aspect of the site is buggy.)

It might be faster for you to get a new profile. See step 7 below for more information.
6) Do you get a blank screen when you try to enter the chat room, or a message about your profile not being approved - even though your profile is approved?

First thing to do is to clear your cookies. If you are using Internet Explorer, then do these steps: (a) click on Tools on your browser's menu bar; (b) select Internet options; (c) In the middle of the grey box, you'll find a button that says Delete Cookies... - click on it.

Then close all your windows. I mean all of them!. Reboot your machine and try again.
7) Still can't get in? Try getting a new profile.

It's actually quite easy to get a new profile. The first step is to get a new free mail address. There are many sites on the internet which will let you sign up in a very few steps. Unfortunately, Friend Finder's rules will not let me explain how to do this. Please ask a friend.

Open up a new browser window and try browsing to this site. Instead of logging in click on the Join button.

If you are a woman, I recommend that you set your age to the highest possible age (e.g. over 90 years old), and indicate that you are looking for another woman. Do not upload a photo! (You will get very little mail this way.)

New profiles will often be approved within a very few hours, if they are short. (This is usually much less time than it will take for the system to change you from an "associate" to an "active" member, or to consider you "active" if you have just turned your profile back on.)

For example, your introduction title can be something like "I'm new here".

Both parts of your main profile can be very simple, such as "I'm new here. I'm just testing the waters. I don't really know what to say, but I will change this later."
