Needs vs. Wants

Why is it we always want what we haven’t got or can’t have? We don’t necessarily need it but we want it all the same?
I got to thinking last night about wants vs. needs.
You know the grass is always greener etc.
I dated (if you could call it that) a guy who believed he could get whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted it. At the time his bravado intrigued me I thought it was cool. More fool me, anyway his philosophy was that if you wanted it you worked hard and did what ever possible to get it. Whether he needed it or not I guess it was male ego to have things his way.
Well his wants where left unfulfilled with me, he wanted sex and it was his ego and the cocky manner in which he went about things that brought me to the decision to put my needs first.
So evidently we spilt up, at the time it wasn’t really what I wanted but it was what I ultimately needed.
So do we confuse cockiness with desire and needs?
