Chidren don't lie

We were on our way to the beach. Just the kids and me, for a day of sun and fun.
I was as usual, telling ridiculous stories and talking all kinds of stupidness.
I was coming to the end of one little melodrama which concluded with me faking a cry. Of course the kids believed every word of it, well the littlest ones at least.
“Oh, boo hoo.” I cried, with my face all twisted. “Oh, boo hoo. Nobody likes me, nobody loves me.”
My youngest daughter Iona, looked at me with concern and compassion in her eyes, the act was working.
“Sniffle, sob, sniffle. I’m too smelly. Too smelly and too stupid, and nobody loves me. Sob, sniffle.”
It was working great, she looked as if she was about to burst into tears. I was on a roll.
“Sniffle, sniffle, sob, sob. I’m too smelly and too stupid and too ugly and too nasty and too horrible. Oh, boo hoo, nobody loves me.”
The little dear, you could see her trying hard to think, she wanted to help.
Suddenly her face brightened up. Like she had something. She looked up at me with a little smile. “No Daddy,” she said brightly, “You not stupid.!”
