"Here, and yeah far away too"

........."Bells toll, people listen and you before anyone should know the truth. Come closer." The travelers from Belgium eyed the wretch of an old man dubiously. He seemed to blend into life, blurring the lines between ordinary objects, almost disappearing into the urbane. "Listen!" Brown fingers poked out of his gloves and there was his spasmodic twitch, after which he would glare, like daring you to say something but you knew you wouldn't. The tourists moved on, shaking their heads and in a hopeless gesture the old man settled in his rags once again. He cackled to himself, rocking. Soon. None of the modern things would matter. He'd seen the signs. He crossed himself, quickly. The waterfall had tripled, and there was an extremely subtle shift to the right throgh the whole Island. They were doomed. "Bells toll, bells toll!" The rumbling began then everything shook, stopped dead, then shook again. The old man hurried to his boat, it was the only way out. Used to be, all the people knew what bells tolling meant. It meant disaster.
...........Pulling on the worn oars toward the dark blue of the deeper waters, he looked back to see the island heaving, trees shaking. He paddled faster.
.........Jane S, amid the wreckage of the bio teams jeep, groand and pushed boxes off her. There at the dock, sirens blared aboard the bio teams boat. Scientists scrambled to collect the boxes and Jane felt the lump on her forehead from the crash, cursing the earthquake. She knew what all of them now knew. They had to get out of there. The danger was simple. Tsunami. She hurried, and the engines started. It was going to be a long day.
