Dazed at Starved Rock State Park

The day was hot and humid. You and I were hiking the trails and exploring each boxed canyon, contemplating the beauty, and potential, of each waterfall we encountered. Occasionally inspecting the more likely candidates up close and personal, holding hands while crossing the stones, giggling like schoolchildren.

The cascading water rumbled like distant thunder, the cool spray from the falls wetting hair and clothing alike. Laughing, you turned and walked into the falling water, beckoning me to join you. I stepped forward, and closed my eyes, lifting my face into the cool flow. The sound was much louder now, the water much cooler than expected.

A strong breeze began to blow. Then a door slammed. Startled, I opened my eyes to blinding brilliance. I reached out . . . to darkness, an empty room. Thunder crashed. A cold rain was blowing in through an open window.
