Homemade ice cream!

I was at Target today, they had 4 quart ice cream makers on sale for $17.88.

Stopped by the store on the way home, bought peaches and blackberries, heavy cream, milk, and rock salt. Came home and emptied out the ice maker.

Right now, I'm eating fresh, homemade peach ice cream. The blackberries are on the endangerd list tomorrow.

YUM!!!

I've never understood the role that rock salt played in this process.

What do it do?

It melts the ice faster. When ice melts, it releases cold, which makes more cold to freeze the ice cream faster.

Honey Vanilla. Sweet Cream (local Toronto shop), Lemone (sure it's an ice, but still) Rizzo (Vivalli's in Florence), Spiced Pumpkin (Vancouver Shop). Oh, I could go on and on.

Homemade ice cream tastes sooooo good (though Blue Bell does a pretty decent job if you can't make your own).

I loved the added bonus of a physics lesson on the role of salt - I've always found it curious that the faster you freeze the ice cream, the smoother it is. Apparently, science geeks are making awesome batches using liquid nitrogen, but when raspberries are hard to come by, it must be a real bitch to pickup liquid nitrogen on the way home from Target.

You are amazing - not only attractive AND an ice cream lover/maker, but being able to describe the chemical processes involved as well... Wow, that's well-rounded - like the cherry on top of the sundae!

Wow!
They still make those things?
Is it that cylinder thing with the crank on the top
that makes that raspy snurfling sound or are they
different now?

It's electric. It turns itself!

Ohhh sounds good. I've seen those things but I've never been convinced that I could do it better than one of the posh commercial brands.
The idea of using rock salt is to absorb energy by melting of ice. The energy in this case is the heat energy in the ingredients that you're turning into ice cream. Cold is an sbsence of heat energy so the function of the salt is to move energy from food to water.

Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life.

We used one of those new ice cream makers that is in the shape of a ball recently. Fill one end with the ingredients and the other with the ice and salt Throw the thing around for 10 minutes and you've got ice cream. Made it to go on top of apple crisp made in a dutch oven with home made carmel sauce. Camping desert at it's best.

Was this an electric ice cream maker or did you get the one that comes with a free work out by cranking the handle?

Kelli,

The ice cream looks yummy, the fruit sounds good, but mostly I wanted to comment about the bowl the ice cream is in (looks strikingly familiar.)
