Do I need a haircut?

A friend took this picture last weekend. I know that my hair has been a real pain to deal with lately, but I didn't realize it had gotten so long, or that it looked so ratty.

The one nice thing is that with the weight it tends to straighten it out ...

So, what should I do, get a haircut, or do something else with it? It can't stay like this, it's driving me crazy.

Any suggestions?

I think it looks nice. However, if it's driving you crazy, cut it. Worst case, you don't like it and have to wait for it to grow back in a few months. Best case, you like it and all men wish they could take you to dinner. If you cut it, you'll probably wind up somewhere in the middle. You think it's "just OK", and only half the men wish they could take you to dinner. But that's still a pretty good outcome.

Seriously, I'd say slice it off up to about the middle of your back...otherwise you lose the beauty of the bouncy curls...not to mention length gives better grip for a proper hand-hold from behind...

Maybe just wear it in a long pony-tail. You'd still have the weight, but it would be less in the way.

I think it is beautiful, but I totally understand about it being heavy. Mine is about 4 or 5 inches shorter then yours and really really thick. I can't pull it up into a ponytail anymore because the wieght of it gives me a headache. Same with yours? I like the length that it is in your profile picture.

rm_kelli4u2dew replies on 5/12/2006 7:05 am:
Exactly. When I was 16, it came to my knees. My braid was thicker than my wrist, and I had constant headaches. The doctors couldn't figure out why, then another girl said, "Duh! try cutting your hair."

personally, we think your hair looks great, but afterall, it is your hair. We are sure that you would be beautiful even if all your hair were gone. With hair that long, a foot isn't THAT much. you will look great either way. There is only so much time that you have available to put into it each day. If you are looking for options to getting rid of it, we could french braid it for you - well, just a thought. Hope you like it - no matter what you decide.

It looks fantastic, but I'd go with trimming it, not too much though, I always get really shocked with how mine looks, even if just a few inches are sliced off!! When it gets too long I kind of wind it up on top of my head and keep it in place with pens, chopsticks, toothbrushes, forks, whatever is at hand ~ it's now a running joke in my family about what I'll have in my hair!

6 - 9 inches would be fine. What is wrong with curls for heavens sake? Do you know how many women would kill to have long curly hair with your colour. If they found out yours was all natural they would possibly kill you with looks alone, jealousy in a woman is a bad, bad thing.

I can't beleieve I'm giving hair advice. After growing up with a hair stylist for a mother I've spent 25 years of my life trying to avoid the subject of hair. Sighs.

So...are you really going to do what all the comments here collaborate to say? Or is Kelli going to do it her own way anyway? Your hair is probably some of the nicest I have seen, but you have seen my hair cut, I cannot even begin to appreciate what it would be like to have to pack the weight of that around. It is very nice, and since it is natural, something many people (I almost said women, then realized my brother alters his more than most) cannot say, it would be a shame to see it go away. Trim it for neatness, but don't lose the curls, they are keepers!

rm_kelli4u2dew replies on 5/12/2006 7:11 am:
Losing the curls isn't an option. I'd have to use chemicals on it, and shudder I won't do that! when I cut it, it'll look like I got a perm when there's less weight.

You cut or trim, what you think you need to. I do believe that in order to donate to "Locks of Love" you have to have no less than 8-12 inches. Go online and check out the website for more information.
Mine is long, thick ... but I have it thinned out when I do get a cut. That has helped over time.

D says: My favorite length is L's, which is to the lower edge of one's shoulder blades. That looks great on just about everybody. You probably would look cute in a short office style haircut, too.

Short? I had it cut to my shoulders once ... stuck out about a foot past my shoulders. A big, unruly mop that I was constantly fighting. If it's too short to braid, I'll go all the way to shaved.

Wow!I really love your hair, but I can understand about it being a pain...I have to wear mine up in my job, for good reason, and I doubt I would let mine get quite so long...I'm going to assume your hair is naturally curly like mine, well, maybe yours is curlier, so any amount you cut off will shrink it up, making it look shorter than what it really is...
I wouldn't go shorter than your profile pic, unless you just want short hair...I think a few inches below the shoulder blades still looks "neat", and will still keep enough weight on it to keep some of the curly/frizzies down...
I don't know if that helps you any or not

rm_kelli4u2dew replies on 5/13/2006 6:22 pm:
Yes, that's kinda what I'm thinking. If I cut it real short, it would become completely unmanageable. Like a curly fright wig, going in every direction.

Perchance2000 57M

5/12/2006 4:24 pm

No, you don't need it from the point of looks, indeed your hair is - as most have put it - quite lovely (English understatement of the day) - and that's why so many suggest that you don't - but there is quite a bit of self-interest in the commentators.

But then there is the part of feeling good about it - vanity must suffer, don't they say? Nobody should - and that makes fantasylover's comment so astute. Don't let yourself be abused - by your thinking too much as to how others might find you. Rather, experiment - and take it step by step, having cut as much at a time that you feel comfortable you can grow back in a comfortable time frame. You may be surprised and find yourself liking short hair (no, I'm not talking shaved, of course - but even that may be something interesting to consider).

I hope you won't take offense. What does a man know about hair anyway - unless he is like Nightguy, who has just the most amazing and attractive hair style - for a gentleman!

It's gorgeous, but I hear ya.

Blunt cut, right below like, armpit length. But not talking about armpit hair, lol.

It'll still be long, still have weight, but will have more movement to it.

Then later if you want to get some layers cut into you can, but if it's curly, this will probably work best.

But yeah, it's really beautiful.

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

Hello, I would recommend doing three things. Cut your hair about 5 to 6 inches shorter (a little below the arm pit area) so that your hair has a straight cut across. I think the shorter hair (but not to short) will give your hair more life so when you're walking around it will have more bounce and a more energetic look. The shorter hair will be very sexy when playing sports or blowing in the air or other activities.

Secondly from the picture it appears you have wavy hair (curly but not that curly) from around ears and below... I would continue that curl throughout all of your hair. I think that would give a nice even look so starting at the top with a more wavy look, but this could simply be not being able to see that well from the pic.

Lastly I would recommend doing a little darker highlights throughout your hair. The auburn is a very pretty color but I think a the mixture of the auburn and gentle highlights (not very dark) would give your hair a perfect touch.

Just my two cents!! Cheers!

Oh what the heck, your hair is causing so much of a commotion amongst blog land that I too will offer up a suggestion. Cut it at the shoulder blades to keep some weight to stretch out some of those lovely curls. If your lochs would not so tightly wound I would even suggest to keep it shoulder length. I was a long hair once, but that's another story I can sympathize with the time needed to upkeep your hair.
You will be able to cut time on washing, brushing and of course drying it. Let us not forget that summer is already here and you will benefit more from having less to trap that warm air.
Whatever you decide to do please don't get bangs! Forget not to share with us the results of your decision.
