companion or family member?

what is it about a pet that makes such a strong impact on our lives? i have always had pets. we had cats in the house before i was even born. when i was married, we at one point had 5 dogs, 4 cats, a bird, several hamsters, a gerbil, a rat, and countless fish. i was down to 3 dogs and 1 cat myself since having to move to a smaller residence after my divorce. then i lost tazz and pooh, 2 of my pugs. it was devastating, but i eventually accepted their loss, and grew to be content with cujo (the remaining pug) and pogo (a very fat tuxedo cat). recently 2 new members have joined our family. 2 kittens (a brother and sister) that were abandoned. they have since been named cinci (the orange and white male who is missing half his tail), after the cincinnati bengals (my favorite football team) and carolina (the solid black female), after the carolina panthers. at first i thought pogo would be resentful that he had to share attention with 2 more cats, but he has developed a surprising "maternal" affection with them. he cleans them, plays with them, and sleeps with them in their makeshift bed (a comforter piled into an easychair). the dog could care less about the new arrivals. carolina is a very reserved, shy kitten. not yet a lover of lots of attention. cinci is a very active, spunky clown. he's plays with himself in the mirrored closet doors and climbs the drapes (his newest game). he loves attention, and comes out of their hiding place as soon as someone comes home looking for a little attention. he tries to get carolina to be more outgoing and she has gotten remarkedly better since coming into our home. pictures to come soon of "the new gang".

Awwwww, that's great kat....pets are wonderful, and I truly feel they are like our children...and should be treated as such.
