On the pursuit of hedonsim...

When did the pursuit of earthly pleasures become such an anathema? To it, the Romans pretty much dedicated their lives. They were an orgy waiting for an excuse to happen. The pagan religions often involved sexual rituals to mark seasons and appease the gods. In his book, "The Power of Myth," Joseph Campbell hits the mark squarely.

"If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living...I say, follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open for you where you didn't know they were going to be."

Without going on a tirade about the failings of organized religions, let us just say that the rise of Christianity brought about the downfall of hedonism as an accepted part of daily life. Sex, maternity, pleasure, etc. now became dirty, sinful. Alcohol is seemingly the only vice that even the Christian majority seems unable to do without. The increase of the Muslim faith's numbers may reduce the number of nations where alcohol is frowned upon. But, the majority of the cultures worldwide still accept or at least tolerate the consumption of alcohol.
Sex, however, got the bad end of the stick. Why? It has to be one of, if not THE, most pleasurable things in which a human can find pleasure. I wish I had an answer.
Until someone presents me with a convincing argument, that doesn't involve burning in hell, I will continue to engage in those activities which make me feel good. Sometimes to excess. Sometimes in moderation. Come along...the best experiences are those that are shared.

Have a good weekend!!!
