Big Ass Snapper

Today I drove up to a state park near my home to go swimming.

On my way down to the beach, I noticed three
women standing around looking at something on the ground while keeping their distance. I was hard to tell what it was, it looked like a rock but it was a Big Ass snapping turtle!

I estimate her shell size to be about 35cm long.
She was in the process of laying and burying her eggs.

Maintenance workers came and leaned plywood against the tree stump next to her so she could finish in shade and privacy. They moved her farther back into the woods when she finished.

I have a pretty decent camera and was able to zoom in while I was uploading to photoshop.
This creature is positively prehistoric looking. I can't think of an animal with a better design than a turtle.

I was also fortunate to see a Baltimore oriole (the bird, not the baseball player).

Being unemployed doesn't pay well but the benefits can be pretty good.

One of the contract my company has is to monitor birds and mammals round the offshore oil platforms in the Atlantic. My guys see a lot of leatherback turtles and strangly enough they also rescued an Oriole that was blown offshore in a storm.

Thank You for Your Time and Attention

No, you may not.
It would be bad for the turtle.
You'll have to do your own snapping on that one.

It was about time that I re-visited your blog. Fun to see another side of you I hadn't seen before. As a kid I went fishing in a small private lake a few miles from my home. One day I caught a fish that was very difficult to pull in. You guessed it....a snapping turtle almost as big as me(I was a small kid). Rather than wrestle him or her to get the hook out I cut the line as close to it's mouth as I could get. I saw it a few times after that so I knew I hadn't injured it much if any.

We found a baby snapping turtle in our yard a few years ago. It wasn't much bigger than a half dollar. We're miles from the nearest body of water. We never figured out how it ended up in our yard. We raised it until it got about twice its size, then released it into the closest pond where we knew there were other snappers (it's illegal to keep them in Texas). So we're serious friends of turtles here.

Great story and great pic. Is there any way to get a bigger picture?

I can dig it!! Being unemployed sucks but the things you see while out and about are wild... I saw one of those turtles at the beach and I saw a damn HAMMER HEAD SHARK too! Were they in my space or was I in their space?

My friends and I "captured" one of those things when I was 12. It was huge. And it was PISSED that we were messing with it. It snapped through a one inch diameter limb like it was a matchstick. Those things are strong. One in a toilet isn't just going to bite your balls. It will pull your ass down through the pipes and into the sewer.
