Are there any heros or gentlemen left in the world?

My car broke down in rush hour traffic this evening. Damn annoying. However, it was at a stop street, so things could have been worse. At least I was not in the middle of the intersection.

The gradient of the road was quite steep, so there was no chance of me pushing the car to the side on my own, and i think i can't have been flashing enough leg because it took ages for anyone to stop and help me.

I put my hazard lights on, and phoned for help, but in the 20 minutes that I waited, I observed the following - I thin you will it as interesting as I did.

At least 120 cars drove past me.
2 stopped and offered help.
5 hooted at me in annoyance as if I was doing something wrong.
5 flashed lights at me from behind in annoyance as if I was doing something wrong.
3 cars (ladies I must admit) stopped behind me and waited for me to go, realising about 3 minutes later that I had my hazard lights on...)
7 cars from across the intersection who were turning flashed lights at me to indicate that I could go in front of them (I guess they could not see my hazards either!!)
Lastly, significantly less than half of the cars from behind me noticed more than 2 - 3 meters away that I had my hazard lights on and changed lanes before they were so close they had to wait before they could.

And I forgot to mention the best bit - A police Car drove past me too. I get stopped all the time and have to show my license, but when I need help, they don't stop me. SIGH.

This is an extraordinary comment on how we drive.

Born in the late 40's, raised in the 50's and early 60's when life wasn't like this, this makes me particularly sad. I feel particularly sorry for folks who have never experienced the kinder more considerate world I was raised in.

Heck, Mike - I was born in the 60s, raised in the 70s and 80s... and *I* have trouble with the 'Me-First' attitude that so many people exhibit today.

I have heard of those times, and sometimes see evidence of it, but it seems to have died a slow death. Sometimes I get confused at work when a man stands back at a doorway, and wonder what is happening - if there is a reason why we should not walk through. This causes a few laughs! But there are still a few gents out there, I am pleased to report, just not as many as there used to be.

I once offered my seat to an elderly lady in a queue when the men did not, and she looked at me with a mixture of suspicion, surprise, and then such gratitude I almost wished I could crawl away. She then went into a long story about the "good old days". Imagine what she was used to?
Thanks for visiting.

One man who was CLEARLY in a rush did stop and helped push me to the side of the road (big karmic points for him), and another stopped and asked me if I had called for help and needed anything. (Points for him too.
Thanks for asking.
PS - hope your birthday was a wonderful one.

It is sad, but I guess it is up to us to change it? I try to "do a good deed every day" (yes, I was a girl guide, *nerd*), and find that if you practice this, opportunities arise more often that you realise.
Every star fish you throw back into the sea is one more that gets to live.
So - how goes it with Fun? Have you two kissed and made up yet?

They don't call it the Instant Oatmeal society for nothing I guess. But you are right - Let's hope that the next "wave" of adults has been brought up with a bit more kindness and grace...

Interesting point of view. I believe that most won't even have seen me. I think if asked, they may vaguely remember some woman who was an idiot blocking the traffic. Ha ha.

I was going to say the same thing.

I think the reason many people dont get involved nowadays is because they mistrust people.

Hmph! I didn't figure you to be a cynic for real... but that is an interesting leap from selfish driving to untrustworthy character.

Thanks for stopping by again.

How is your little kitty cat?

In my experience, police will only stop if they can issue you a ticket.

That may be true.

Thanks for the visit.

I survived today!

I don't know how as a 4x4 & boat nearly wiped me out! (Changing lanes and did not signal) Lucky for me there was no car next to me and I could go into the next lane. With in the same block 3 Taxis did the same thing to me again! I nearly stopped and got out of my car and walked home. Except I was only one block away from work and 20km away from home!!!

Have a great weekend.
