DVD review - "Elektra"

I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I actually enjoyed this movie... I was honestly not expecting anything with Jennifer Garner in it to be worth watching.

Her only saving grace to me is that she (like me) is a native Texan (she was born in Houston, 1972). Her previous films, all of which I thought were deplorable, include "Pearl Harbor" (almost tolerable, only because she was SO pretty then), "Catch Me If You Can" (with Leo DiCaprio), "Daredevil" (with future sperm donor Ben Affleck), "13 Going on 30" (ugh!), "Dude Where's My Car" (surprised she didn't hook up with Ashton Kutcher), and a handful of others...none of which impressed me in the least.

Yet, I digress. In "Elektra", Garner was not only very believable as a highly-trained assassin (she's got the moves down), but in softer, more "personal" parts of the film her sincerity and genuine good-natured-girl-turned-bad showed through.

The special effects in this movie were out of this world - and a nice twist, compared to some of the more commonly used "Matrix" style effects used in most action movies today (although they did include one Matrix-style scene which made me groan). The fight scenes were well-choreographed (think "Kill Bill") and the acting was well done, both by Garner, but also by everyone's favorite Croatian E.R. doctor "Luka Kovac" (Goran Vijisnic), who plays the intended "mark". Ironically, his character name was "Mark". They could have been a little more creative here, I think. Or maybe that was the point...

All in all, this was a moderatly enjoyable movie ...not an instant classic, but a thoroughly enjoyable film. The action never really let up, which kept me interested for the majority of the film.

A nice twist towards the end, too (hint: "Treasure")
