The Horrendous Cycle of a Blog Addict

Well, I have now been on the blogs here for a little over 3 months. I have written more in this time than the entirety of the balance of my existence, even including when I was 6 and using crayons. Now that I am such a veteran of the blogs, please allow me to personally provide you all with my observations of the life cycle of a blogger.

1. Start Reading Blogs
You start out as a lurker, reading posts here and there. Sooner or later you run across an intriguing or challenging post from someone else's blog and start mulling about in your head for a response, challenge or agreement. You always start by leaving comments on other people's blogs first but start to have an urge or increased desire for your own blog. You simply want to belong.

2. You Start A Blog
You start easy. Simple topics that are easily grasped while placing as much personal content as possible. Perhaps post about a few of your previous mischievous exploits to prove that you belong in this new environment. These written exploits are extremely satisfying. You begin to put together a look and feel to your blog and are amazed and pleased that people are viewing and commenting on what you have to say. Creating your on line personality becomes an important part of your day.

3. You start looking at and referring to stats, aka "Stats Whore". You redo your profile, take and upload a new profile pic to improve your "look". You voraciously groom your "Watched Blog List" commenting as much as possible and start building your posse. You start "Stupid Blog Games" and other such trivial posts to create additional traffic.

4. Your become really personal on your site as the on line and real life worlds start confusing you. You sometimes voice your real opinion on topics and occasionally get flamed and you occasionally flame back. At some point, hopefully, you recognize that some of these comments are intentionally gregarious and not worth your time.

5. You fake "retire" from blogging. Temporarily exhausting the emotional reservoir from which your personal blog has sprung from, you post about retiring or possibly a short vacation from blogging. A hiatus or sabbatical you might say. It could be permanent, a month or a week.

6. You cave in after less than 72 hours. Blogging appears to have similar addictive traits akin to crack or heroin.

7. You decide to get serious about blogging. You seek out the top bloggers, reading and commenting on their posts. You attempt to solidify and extend your posse.

8. You have flirty IM's with bloggers and establish pseudo relationships with bloggers whom you have never met. Perhaps you even have a RL relationship with one. This will likely end badly. Very badly.

9. You decide that you must meet other bloggers. A vacation involving stops at fellow bloggers homes or perhaps a meet and greet. Meeting these other celebrity bloggers is akin to going to Fisherman's Wharf. Your blog views and comments by this time are up 300%.

10. You now start blogging about blogging and what blogging has done to your blogging. You possibly become annoying. Your audience eats this stuff up.

11. Refer to step 5.

12. You decide that as a result of step 10 and having repeated step 5 at least 3 times that you need to reinvent you blog. You purge or hide previous posts, remove unsuccessful posts and go back to writing about how to make the perfect fondue. Albeit, your blog now validates such drither.

13. You either lose your job because of blogging (if you had one in the first place), are afraid of losing your job for blogging or seek employment from a company in which you can hide and continue your addiction during working hours. Either way, your blog either dies a horrible painful death or becomes significantly less personal only posting trite and uninteresting subject matter.

14. Nevertheless, you continue the pattern, utilizing number 5 many times until you decide that blogging as a full time job is simply not paying the bills and that you really do need more that a couple of 2 hour naps during the night.

Who you talkin' 'bout? I don't have a problem. My blogging is not a problem, interfering in my ability to carry on relationships. I could give it up at any time.

However...I noticed that my blog is not among the "People who like this blog also like..." list, so I'm not sure I can visit your blog any longer.

I've noticed that my blog isn't on anyone's fucking list. What's up with that? It's just like high school. No one likes me, everybody hates me. Think I'll suck some diiiiick.

Isn't that the way it goes?

...obviously you have never chatted online before this, huh? That cycle applies to pretty much all forms of online life, not just blogs.

That will have to be a separate post base on specific nuances between the two. I also suffer from the IM disease.

You pretty much nailed blogging on the head (although I have never had a blog game on my blog in the 11 months and 27 days it's been going).

Didn't you miss one bit out though? Think about it...

I've never taken blogging serious enough to get past Step 2.

In a way, blogging is just my way of reaching like minds for intellectual conversation.

That alone means I won't be a popular blogger.

My favorite bloggers are obscure and my "watched list" is small.

When I've gone a week or so without posting, people say "welcome back".

It's not that I've gone anywhere so to speak, just that I only post when I have something to say.

I'm not a blog addict, evidently.

Yet you are popular nevertheless. I've had a few week or more absences. Get emails from people checking to see if I'm ok. Not a blog addict, but probably could be if you really wanted to. Thanks DIV.

I can go weeks without looking at any blog but mine. Other times I comment on everything. But I still don't talk about my relationships on the blogs. That's private and not for blogville commentary. Addictive personalities can be addicted to anything though... It's just not my drug of choice... though it might be healthier.

rm_gerson42 replies on 8/1/2006 11:12 pm:
I do the same thing. Kinda of go in spurts. I totally agree about not talking about realationships here. Never seen it do any good.

ok, that was funny and scary and true all at the same time.
One of the things I do worry about, is when I eventually go back to work full time, how I can fit in blogging.
I will just have to work out of the home, that's the only way.
Now I gotta think me up a blog game....

rm_gerson42 replies on 8/1/2006 11:13 pm:
I can send you a blog game if you want. Got a bunch on the to post list. lol

LOL.. This is amusing.. however.. there is one issue with my part. I visit other blogs because I am curious to see the difference of opinions and value what others (some anyway) are saying.. not for a status quo..

other than that.. this is dead on..

Of course, I didn't recognize any of the characteristics you mention, either in my personality or those of the 63,000 friends I have on this site, I just dropped by to say that I saw your birthdate on someone else's blog, and to say that makes 3 of us that I know of. Wanna form a clique?
