Agism, The New Prejudice
As a society, we Americans have addressed and fought against racism, sexism, homophobia, and classism. Although we have not conquered any of these prejudices, we have talked about them, marched about them and passed laws against them.
Now, as a aging Baby Boomer, I now have to confront prejudice against people who are over 50. I have a message for the younger generation: We boomers are alive and kicking and we plan to be around a long time; so get used to us.
You ladies know you have reached a certain age when the bagger at the grocery calls you, "Mam", and we men know we have hit that magic age when the girls who used to flirt with us suddenly address us as "sir."
I believe you are as old as you feel. Today's 60 is what 40 was in the early 1900s.
So if you got a little gray hair (snow on the mountain top, but fire in the furnace), and keep on living life to the fullest. Remember Goldie Hawn is 60!
