MAN DATE-According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a mandate is: “An authoritative command or instruction.” Our command comes from Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy. It is part of the Judeo-Christian tradition. For today we honor a man who had a simple yet profound dream: that we live together in peace and love each other as brothers and sisters. This is our mandate today, this is our hope.
Peace. Today, the bright sun of peace is covered by the dark storm clouds of war. An immoral war, an unprovoked war. Yesterday, America invaded Vietnam, today America invades Iraq. Billions of dollars go to this war machine, billions that could have gone to health care, aid to the poor, support for education. Billions. And again we must hope when there is no hope that the rays of peace might break through the storm clouds like the morning sun lest we be lost in the torrential rain of despair. Those who pray must pray for peace; those who chant must chant for peace; and those who march must march for peace.
The legacy of Martin Luther King is the dream of peace and love. We must make peace our mandate; peace is our command. Someday, we, in the words of the Negro spiritual “will lay down our burdens and study war no more.” The people of the world have a choice: peaceful existence or mutual annihilation. As Dr. King once said: “We can either live together as brothers [and sisters], or perish together as fools.” The choice is ours.

And my dear, we should choose love over hate; peace over war.
