THE KENTUCKY GENTLEMAN

I always like to know what other people are reading. It seems that there are so many good books, but so little time to read them.
Recently, I read Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This is probably the best book I have read this year. It will make you smile, it will make you cry; it will make you happy, and it will make you sad. And you won't want to put it down. Set in prewar and postwar Afghnistan, Hosseini takes the reader into another world on the other side of the globe. Born into privilege but with a dark family secret, he tells us of an idyllic childhood that ended abruptly when the Russians invaded Afghanistan. The Russians found this mountainous country to be their Vietnam, but when they left they were replaced by religious extremists and thugs--the Taliban. Although Hosseini has built a happy and successful life in America as a writer, duty calls him back to the land of his birth and an experience that will change his life forever.
Kite Runner has it all: beautiful prose, fascinating people, suspense, and spiritual depth.
As I said earlier, it is the best book I have read this year--so far.
If anyone out there has read it, I would love to read your thoughts and insights about this marvelous book.
