THE KENTUCKY GENTLEMAN

"Summertime When the Living is Easy"
I have been enjoying and digging on jazz ever since I was a teenager. I first learned about the art form from some older guys who had returned from Nam(Vietnam). They taught me how to drink and not get drunk, smoke reefer and appreciate jazz. Suddenly, I was going to the store to buy albums by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ramsey Lewis,Wayne Shorter, and Jimmie Smith.
There is a type of divinity in the pure trumpet tones of Miles Davis playing "My Funny Valentine" or "Summertime."
On hot, summer air conditionless nights we sat on porches and drank tequila and listened to the jazz greats...."Summertime when the living is easy, fish are jumping and the cotton is high...."
Summertime, Miles and Tequila on a starspangled southern night where girls walked in beauty with hotpants and miniskirts and after some good herb
time stood still and I watched a shooting star
while Miles hit all the high notes, all the blues notes, all the inbetween notes....Summertime and I was eightteen and my life stretched into forever and Miles played on into the night and into the dew soaked dawn of June and Jazz....Summertime....

So, Kit tell me what it was like when you were 18. Was it a very good year?

Humboldthonni, you, too, are a fan of the immortal Miles Davis. Yes, Sketches of Spain is a musical orgasm.
